of grounds, near a village in France’s Loire department, 45 kilometres from Saint-Étienne
Location
Facing the spectacular Pilat massif, the charming village of Pouilly-lès-Feurs lies by the breathtaking Forez mountains. It is only 45 kilometres from the city of Saint-Etienne and 80 kilometres from the city of Lyon. The quaint village is nestled upon the slopes of green foothills. Pouilly-lès-Feurs is a former Gallo-Roman settlement. Cluniac monks settled here in the 10th century. Then, in the 11th and 12th centuries, they built a remarkable Romanesque church here. And from the 12th century to the 15th century, these monks built a Benedictine priory in the village too. This priory was redesigned over several periods. Around the village, they built ramparts with two gates and 10 towers, nine of which have survived up to today either partly or entirely. Pouilly-lès-Feurs offers many shops and amenities for everyday life. Local farmers sell high-quality produce. From the train station in the town of Feurs, five kilometres from the village, a regular train service gets you to Lyon by rail.
Description
The house
The rendered elevations display symmetry with windows evenly spaced out on either side of a central axis where the main entrance welcomes you. The house is a single-storey dwelling that is easy to live inside with distinct spaces. The fitted kitchen offers indoor and outdoor use with a covered terrace. The entrance door leads into a hallway with a radial layout of doors connecting to a lounge with a fireplace insert, to bedrooms, to a separate lavatory, to a covered terrace facing the garden, and to an indoor swimming pool. To the right of the hallway, there is a dining room and a fitted kitchen with an eating area. These rooms lead out to a south-facing terrace. Next, a few steps and a corridor take you to a row of utility rooms, including a cold room and a laundry room. To the left of the hallway, there is a cloakroom, an office, a separate lavatory, a storeroom, a bedroom with a bathroom that has a shower and a double washbasin, three other bedrooms, a second bathroom, and a second storeroom. Underfloor heating from underground geothermal energy warms the house up.
The swimming pool
In the west wing, there is an indoor swimming pool. It is eight metres long and four metres wide. A heat pump warms it up. This heated pool, fitted with a counter-current system, can be enjoyed all year round. The technical installations room for the swimming pool is underground and can be reached from outside. There is a storeroom and a changing room with a shower and a separate lavatory.
The carport
A carport was recently added. It has a gabled roof of barrel tiles and it stands to the right of the entrance door. Up to four vehicles or gardening machines can be parked in this carport. Opposite the entrance gate, there are two garages and two workshops. They are useful multi-purpose spaces.
The garden and grounds
The garden is enclosed with fencing and divided into several spaces. There is a paved driveway that runs from the entrance gate up to the house and past the carport, there are hedges of trees and well-trimmed shrubs, there are tastefully arranged clusters of flowering plants, and, linking everything together, there are vast lawns dotted with both majestic trees and younger ones. The surrounding grounds are made up of woods, meadows and hedges. Private deer hunts and boar hunts occasionally take place on these vast grounds.

This beautiful region of France will delight you with its walking trails, sports activities and bucolic vistas stretching across hills and mountains to the horizon. The area also includes remarkable built heritage. The property lies in absolute calm. All year round, this welcoming haven of tranquillity invites you to rest. And it opens up a range of possibilities for the future. It could be kept as a splendid home or developed to include attractive guestrooms. Horses can be kept on this vast property too.
