Location

Blois is a hillside city in the heart of the Centre-Val-de-Loire region of France. It is the administrative centre of France’s Loir-et-Cher department. The first inhabitants of Blois lived on an island on the south side of the River Loire. The Romans named this island ‘Insula Evenna’. Today, this area of Blois, which is no longer an island, is known as the Vienne district. The property is nestled on a medieval street that was first mentioned in deeds in 1559. The road is calm. You can reach shops in the city centre on foot. The train station Blois-Chambord is around two kilometres from the property, a former posthouse. You can reach Paris in less than two hours by rail or car.

Description

The dwelling is a former posthouse. It dates back to the end of the 18th century. You enter the house straight from the road via a large wooden door. The property is organised around a rectangular tree-dotted courtyard. On one side, the main building, which forms an L shape, encloses the property. On the other side, the property is enclosed with an old stable and a stone wall. A hipped slate roof crowns the house. The house’s stone facade is rendered and punctuated with large-paned windows fitted with shutters that are painted blue. A first entrance door leads into a separate studio flat. A second one forms the entrance into the main dwelling. Another studio apartment, which is larger and can be reached from the street, has also been created inside. Lastly, the property includes two adjoining annexes: a workshop and a garage.

The main house


The ground floor
Opposite the entrance door, a staircase leads up to the dwelling’s first and second floors. An L-shaped corridor connects to a lavatory and a lounge, which has a fireplace with an insert. From this lounge, French windows lead straight out into the garden. A kitchen extends this lounge, separated from it by a glazed partition. Large pale square tiles adorn the floors of these different rooms. At the back, a passageway leads to a space used as a boiler room and utility room. At one end of this space, a door leads to an open-sided shelter that connects to two annexes and, beyond them, a former stable.

The first floor
At the top of the stairs, a landing connects to two bedrooms and a bathroom on one side. On the other side, the stairs lead up to the top floor and there is a third bedroom, which has a walk-in wardrobe. Like on the top floor, a plant-fibre carpet covers the floors, except in the bathroom, which has a floor of modern grey tiling.

The second floor
A second landing connects to a large bedroom with a sloping ceiling and exposed beams and to an unfinished room that could be turned into a bathroom. On the other side, there is a last bedroom and a loft space that could be converted.

The studio flat

The studio flat is separate. You reach it from the garden via French windows. It has an open-plan fitted kitchen and a shower room with a lavatory.

The apartment

You reach the apartment from the street. On the ground floor, it has a lounge with a fitted kitchen. Upstairs, it has two bedrooms with plain fireplaces painted grey and a shower room with a lavatory.

The workshop

The workshop does not adjoin the house. You reach it via a communal courtyard. Its many windows fill it with much natural light.

The garage

The garage adjoins the workshop. A single car can be parked inside it.

Our opinion

This renovated property bathed in natural light is a delightful haven nestled on a calm street in a district of Blois that is rich in built heritage. The design and layout of the rooms are precious assets. The house would be perfect for a large family to live in and the two apartments offer countless possibilities. For example, friends and family could be accommodated in these extra dwellings, which could also be rented out to visitors. Indeed, the local region draws many tourists.
