Location
Here, in the south of Normandy’s Pays du Houlme province, granite and megaliths dot the countryside, which is a beautiful patchwork of hedge-lined meadows. The charming town of La Ferté-Macé, where the property lies, is nestled between Andaines forest and the Normandie-Maine regional nature park. La Ferté-Macé is renowned for its built heritage. The town, which is embellished with plants, is only 15 minutes from a train station, in the nearby town of Briouze. From there, you can reach central Paris in 2 hours and 15 minutes by rail and the town of Granville in less than one hour by rail. Normandy’s beautiful Côte de Nacre coastline is just 100 kilometres away. And you can get to Paris in three hours by car. In La Ferté-Macé town centre, there are many shops. And a popular market takes place there too.
Description
The grand house
The ground floor
At the top of the front flight of steps, an entrance door beneath a glazed fanlight leads into a spacious hallway. From here, a spiral oak staircase takes you upstairs. Beneath this staircase, a door leads down to the basement. The hall has a tiled floor. On one side, it connects to a dining room and kitchen. These rooms also have tiled floors. Opposite, there is a lounge and reading room. These rooms have parquet flooring. Tall windows and a glazed roof bathe the interior in soft natural light. The lounge leads to a bay window where stained-glass windows bring subdued natural light inside.
The intermediate level
Between two floors, a door leads from the staircase into a spacious yet cosy room with sloping attic ceilings. The room has wood strip flooring and a ceiling of wooden strips. Exposed stonework with pointing forms the walls.
The first floor
Oak strip flooring extends across the first floor. The landing connects to two bedrooms with bathrooms and a third one with a tap. All the rooms on this level are filled with natural light from windows.
The second floor
The stairs end at a floor with sloping attic ceilings and oak strip flooring. Up here there are two bedrooms, a shower room, an office and a storeroom. Dormer windows fill this second floor with natural light.
Our opinion
This elegant house, tucked away in a charming Norman town, is discreet and harmonious. The dwelling’s brickwork facade is patterned delightfully. It is adorned with climbing vegetation and flanked with a column of bay windows that includes stained-glass panes. The interior is pleasant, yet unpretentious. This fine property would be the perfect family home or holiday home. It needs to be freshened up somewhat to bring its past splendour back, but the rooms are already full of exciting promise. The property is ideally located too and easily reached, less than three hours from Paris, in a vibrant, highly sought-after town in Normandy.
