Location
Located in the Yvelines department and surrounded by Impressionist country and the Marly public woodland, this village is accessible via several train stations: L’Etang-Les Sablons tram station, from which the tram line 13 provides access to Versailles and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the downtown SNCF train station, with service to La Défense and the Paris-Saint-Lazare train station and a third, shared with Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, which also provides connections to the SNCF and Tram 13 lines. The town also has two nursery/elementary schools, while nearby Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Versailles have many secondary education establishments, such as the Lycée International in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, only two tram stops away, and the nearby British school in Mareil-Marly.
Description
Originally built in 1900 on a hillside, this four-storey dwelling was entirely restored in accordance with its original character and includes a garden level, ground floor, first floor and converted attic level.
Built out of buhrstone, which is visible on its two lower level façades, its upper level façades are plaster-coated and half-timbered, while the roof, redone, is covered in flat tiles. With more than 200 m² of floor area, the house includes 4 bedrooms – with the possibility of adding a 5th – and nearly 200 m² of outdoor space.
Accessible via the garden protected from the street by a stone wall, the house also has a private, commonhold gravel drive, which descends towards the garden level.
The garden level – sloping from the street – includes two large main rooms on the same level as the garden: a room that could be used for games, television or fitness as well as an office, while the rest of this level includes a storeroom, laundry room/linen cupboard, furnace room, lavatory and a shower room. With oak hardwood floors throughout, tall picture windows bathe the main rooms in ample sunlight.
As for the ground floor level, one step higher than the street level, it includes a vast, grey-tiled kitchen-dining room as well as a living room with hardwood floors, accessible via a couple of steps, with a fireplace and a floor-to-ceiling height of more than 3 metres. These rooms are all flooded in light thanks to several tall arched casement windows as well as a glass door that gives onto a staircase that leads to the garden level.
The first floor includes three bedrooms and a lavatory. Each room has their own balcony and, thanks to the tall casement windows, abundant natural light. A bathroom with a shower and a wardrobe are adjacent to the main bedroom, while the two others share a large bathroom with lavatory, located on the upper half-level, which is also used by the large room in the attic space. The latter includes a vast open volume with an exposed beam ceiling, which could be divided up in order to create a fifth bedroom.
Outside, the garden is split into two sections: one is located on the street level, while the other, situated below, was transformed into a parking area for vehicles. Extending on from the house along the sidewalk, a tall stone wall, which shelters the upper part of the garden from view, has a door that provides access from the street to a short paved path leading up to the house’s front steps. On one end of the wall, two stone pillars frame an inclined, commonhold drive, bordered on one side by an immense curtain of trees, which provides access to the house’s parking area as well as other private homes.
Our opinion
In the centre of the village, this family house, spacious and understated, benefits from the peace and quiet of a residential neighbourhood, while its ample volumes, room layout and variety of surfaces make it possible to imagine a number of different ways in which the space could be used and organised. In each of the house’s rooms, the hardwood or tile floors, windows, light switches, doorknobs, bathroom and lavatory furniture are of the highest quality and bear witness to the house’s extremely meticulous renovation. Last, but certainly not least, this house provides an extremely pleasant living environment within a village that, although close to Paris, has conserved its rustic charm.
