From its Gallo-Roman origins all the way up to the 21st century, from the ancient settlement of Mansionis to the modern Maisons-Laffitte, this town has a rich past stretching back centuries. Major historical figures have marked its story, including René de Longueil, François Mansart, the Count of Artois, Jean Lannes and Jacques Laffitte. Maisons-Laffitte is a vast area for pleasant walks and trips back through time. It has a wealth of architecture and is well known for equestrianism. The town has a distinct character and owes its renown to its history and horse-riding. Indeed, Maisons-Laffitte and horses have long gone hand in hand, starting with the first horse race that took place under King Louis XIV of France. The town has as many trees as it does inhabitants: its forest and parkland make it a delightful place to live in. It is located north-west of Paris, between the River Seine and the forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. It offers specialist food shops, small restaurants with terraces and an indoor market known for its high-quality produce. From the property, you can reach schools, a golf course, horse-riding clubs and sports facilities in a few minutes on foot. It has been maintained remarkably well and is punctuated with many windows on the ground floor. The house is in perfect condition, both inside and outside. It requires no renovation work. Its roof of interlocking tiles was renovated in 2021. The landscaped garden features automated watering. The main entrance door is at the top of a flight of front steps. An old canopy protrudes over it. The facade of burrstone is coated with rendering. The tall rectangular windows are fitted with wooden louvred shutters that are painted green. The house


The ground floor
The entrance door leads into a bright, spacious hallway with a floor of cream and ochre stone tiles. From this entrance hall, you can move smoothly around the whole ground floor. The hallway connects to an open lounge on the left, a dual-aspect reception room with a floor area of around 43m² and direct access to the terrace and garden, a fitted kitchen with a door that leads out to one of the terraces, an office with its own staircase leading up to the first floor, and a master bedroom, which looks out at the terrace and swimming pool and has a walk-in wardrobe and its own bathroom with a shower. Three steps lead down to a lounge and dining area bathed in natural light. This space is the house’s hub where family and friends can gather. It has a painted ceiling with thin beams and a majestic fireplace with a mantel of finely carved wood. Natural light runs across this space, bringing out its wood strip flooring, thanks to openings that were created during a renovation. The room connects to the adjoining hallway and lounge. A small stone staircase leads down to the basement. And a staircase dating back to the house’s time of construction leads up to the bedrooms. The latter staircase has oak steps with risers that are painted cobalt blue.

The first floor
Two different staircases, each with their own landing, lead up to the first floor. On this floor and the second floor, each roof window has been refitted. The first landing connects to three bedrooms, including a large one with sloping ceilings, and to two shower rooms. From the second landing, which has been turned into an ironing space, you can go down to the office on the ground floor via a staircase of solid oak. The floors are carpeted or have a plant-fibre covering upon old wood strip flooring, except in the bathrooms, which are tiled.

The second floor
In the roof space – the second floor – there are the house’s last two bedrooms. They are filled with natural light from wall dormers and fitted with tailor-made wardrobes. A lavatory with a washbasin lies beside them. The floors have coverings similar to those on the first floor.

The basement
You reach the basement from the hallway via a stone staircase that leads to a utility room, which houses the boiler and hot-water tank. On the right, there is a room that serves as a storage space and as a wine cellar. The basement has a good balance in terms of humidity and temperature, so different wines can age in ideal conditions down here.

The garden

The entirely walled garden covers more than 1,000m² and includes trees of several different species and many plants that flower in spring. The garden enjoys absolute privacy and calm. It has a heated swimming pool that is eight metres long and four metres wide. This haven of greenery has been remarkably well maintained and it features automated watering. The garden is divided into several sections: two paved terraces, the swimming pool, and a vast lawn surrounded by tall laurels and dotted with a palm tree, a magnolia, a fig tree and shrubs. Lastly, there is a long annexe that adjoins the house and is fitted with shelves. Gardening tools and pool maintenance equipment can be stored here. Conveniently, there is an entrance at each end of this space.

Our opinion

This delightful property is a rare gem. It offers the essential features of a typical family home: a landscaped garden, two large terraces and as many as six bedrooms. The splendid haven is tucked away in the calm of the former chateau estate of Maisons-Laffitte. It is nestled in a highly sought-after neighbourhood that offers a pleasant lifestyle near the chateau and its grounds and the town’s vibrant equestrian activities. Warm fires in the majestic fireplace heat up the inviting reception room and give the house the rustic charm of a country home, yet Paris is only 15 minutes away by rail. So you could easily get straight into the French capital each day for work, before returning to a peaceful family life here among trees and rose bushes. And in the summer, you could dive into its refreshing swimming pool. Moreover, you can stroll from this home to the local golf course or indoor market and you can go horse-riding nearby too. Indeed, you can enjoy this property’s surroundings as much as the remarkable house itself and its lush, spacious garden.
