A 1970s house with interiors inspired by Jacques Couëlle, set in a 4,000 m² garden
and just 800 m from the beach, in Finistère
Plounéour-Brignogan-plages, FINISTERE brittany 29890 FR

Location

The house is situated in a seaside resort on the Côte des Légendes, in northern Finistère in Brittany. The surroundings are peaceful, nestled between the sea and the countryside. Just 1.5 km away, the village centre offers a range of shops, restaurants and a marina. Lesneven is 10 km away, Landerneau 25 km, and Brest 36 km. The train station has a 4-hour train service to Paris. The airport is 30 minutes away. Finally, the port of Roscoff, with its many ferry routes to England, Ireland and Spain, is less than an hour away.

Description

Set slightly back from the village, a small road used by local residents runs past a few houses before reaching the property. There are two separate driveways. One leads to the garage, the other to an area where several vehicles can be parked. On one side, three granite walls enclose the grounds and shield them from view and the wind. On the other side, the house is surrounded by a large garden with trees and flowers, as well as a terrace. A typical 1970s build, it is a three-storey property (including a basement) in an L-shape. The slate roof is gabled and features dormer windows. Windows with granite frames let light in through the rendered facades. The property was decorated during its construction in 1973 by a pupil of Jacques Couëlle, whose work is part of the architecture/sculpture movement, with its distinctive forms in sprayed concrete. Numerous paintings by the artist are displayed throughout the various rooms of the house. Set slightly back, behind the rocks, a granite rubble-stone outbuilding is used as a garage, workshop and games room on the upper floor. It is accessible by vehicle independently.

The main house

Two entrances lead inside, one to the hall, the other to the kitchen.

The ground floor
From the hall, a cloakroom on one side is decorated with paintings. A corridor leads to a study, a bedroom with en-suite bathroom, and then to a toilet. A staircase, also painted, leads to the first floor. On the other side of the entrance, a spacious reception room is arranged around an open-hearth fireplace, with views in three directions and a sea view. A door leads to the second entrance, which houses a second staircase and opens onto a kitchen with access to the garden. The floors are tiled, with the exception of the bedroom, which is carpeted.
The first floor
A landing leads to the main part of the house. On one side there are two bedrooms, a bathroom and a toilet. On the other a large bedroom, a walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom are arranged in a row. The second staircase, situated between the kitchen and the large reception room, leads to a bedroom and a shower room. The floors are either parquet or carpeted.
The basement
Accessible via a staircase from the hall, it comprises three large rooms and houses a boiler room, a utility room, a wine cellar, a workshop and a wood store. It is approximately 80 m² in area. An external staircase leads to the garden. Windows provide light throughout the entire front of the building. A large crawl space occupies the remainder of the space.

The small house and garage

Built of granite and two storeys high, it covers an area of approximately 80 m². Accessible from the outside via a rubble-stone staircase, the upper floor is fitted out as a games room. A garage and a workshop are located on the lower level. It is possible to store a boat here.

The garden

Well-maintained, it is criss-crossed by small paths through heather, lavender, pittosporum, St John’s wort, cypress, pine, maple, gorse, broom, Mexican orange, tamarisk, rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias.

Our opinion

A stone’s throw from the beaches, a breath of sea air and the breathtaking work inspired by Jacques Couëlle. An iconoclastic and unclassifiable artist, acclaimed by the world’s elite, his pupil, Jacques Margerin, has reimagined a 1970s neo-Breton villa here. His work is most evident in the interior paintings and on the remarkable concrete fireplace in the living room, which reflects a unique, almost organic conception of the material. Well-designed and light-filled, the property is comfortable and would suit a family living here year-round or for use as a second home. Future occupants could retain the decor, following a refresh and modernisation to bring it up to date. The garden, with its monumental granite boulders, adds a touch of exoticism that Gaudí himself would not have turned his nose up at.
