Culture and leisure enthusiasts are also well catered for with a broad selection of activities and festivals. Tallard, less than a quarter of an hour away, possesses an aerodrome and a junction on the A51 motorway, which puts Sisteron within thirty minutes’ reach, Aix-en-Provence, with its high-speed TGV railway station, within 1 hour 30 minutes and Marseille-Marignane airport within 1 hour 45 minutes.
Description
The hipped-roofed, emblematic tower of the residence, which resembles a family manor, stands on one side. The light-coloured façades, roofs made of brown, local, flat tiles and the well-balanced volumes reinforce the house’s traditional appearance. The rest of the building is topped by a gabled roof with markedly protruding eaves. On the southwest façade, up which climbs a flight of steps lined with a guard-rail made of balusters, the main entrance door can be found, framed by a finely crafted, semi-circular stone arch.
A garden with generous foliage stretches alongside the southeast façade. White oak, fir and pine trees outline its contours, while a small wall to the south marks the boundary. The garden is an invitation for pleasant meals in the shade of the trees, or simply for rest and relaxation. A white-painted wrought iron pavilion in the centre of the garden protects a stone statue. Opposite the main garden, the south façade possesses a second, more discrete entrance, framed by a stone arch similar to the main entrance. Higher up behind the house, there is a private wood that can be reached by a flight of steps framed by two columns.
The house
The ground floor
There are two ways into the house: via the large main entrance from the outside steps and terrace or through the more discrete entrance from the garden. Most of the floors on this level are paved with glazed stoneware tiles. On one side, a traditionally decorated fitted kitchen opens onto an entrance corridor via a wide glazed door with a wooden frame, to enhance the visual continuity between the different rooms.
On the other side, a dining room has been paved with terracotta tiles that match the shades of the wood panelling and joinery. It leads in turn to a vast reception hall, boasting a large fireplace, bookshelves and different seating zones. This double-level hall is the veritable hub of the house’s layout and is set around a monumental staircase. Next to it, there is a bathroom, decorated with delicately, geometrically patterned tiles, with two washbasins, large built-in mirrors and a separate lavatory.
The upstairs
From the hall, the central staircase climbs to a vast mezzanine landing, which is a room in itself, designed for reading and relaxing. It leads to the residence’s two wings. The first includes two bedrooms and a shower room, while the second has three extra bedrooms. Each of them has plenty of storage space and views of the surrounding foliage or the mountains, facing to the west, south or east. The distinguishing feature of this level is the immaculate harmony in the choice of materials and finishes: wood stripped flooring, discrete mouldings, and light-coloured walls.
The tower
The second floor of the tower houses a vast bedroom bathed in light, topped by a mezzanine, with an en suite shower room and lavatory. An impression of warmth is provided by the wood stripped flooring, while the windows with finely crafted ironwork guard-rails allow the light to stream in. The exposed roof frame and light-coloured walls highlight the uninterrupted view of the mountains.
The basement
This level can be reached from the residence’s garage and outside parking area and is incorporated into the base of the main section. The garage stands out due to its large door, framed with stone jambs and topped by a semi-circular arch. Inside, a corridor leads to the various rooms on this basement level, which houses a workshop, dance room and games room, next to a utility room and a shower room. Tall and slender windows in the southwest façade let daylight filter in and provide natural ventilation.
Our opinion
This easily accessible, atypical family home stands above Gap in a mountainous and wooded setting. It calls to mind an era when architecture combined durability, elegance and harmony with nature. Its silhouette is dominated by a tower and exudes the character of a building designed to stand the tests of time, both protective and open to its surroundings. As a whole, there is a feeling of equilibrium in its composition, in which the volumes are in harmony with the slope of the land and the lines of the traditional roofs. Its constituent parts come together to produce a unique property, combining neo-classical and regional influences.
