Beaupoil Tower and its adjoining residence stand like a timeless landmark, on the edge of the Entre-deux-Mers sector’s vineyards and orchards, overlooking a meander in the River Dordogne, in the village of Pessac-sur-Dordogne in the Gironde area. The medieval tower still watches over the river and has been a feature of the landscape since the 14th-century. It is the remains of a lord’s residence that has since disappeared. The village includes all essential everyday shops and services, while the valley’s fortified villages and renowned markets can be reached with ease. Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, Libourne and Bordeaux are all within easy reach thanks to the network of main roads nearby. Bordeaux-Mérignac airport can be reached in 1 hour 15 minutes by car, while the city’s train station is 45 minutes away by road.
Description
With the river below, the tower, which is made of local light-yellow stone, boasts a sober and slender silhouette, punctuated by tall windows that let light filter in. Its old construction style, with six tall mullion windows, tells the story of an area shaped by river transport, winemaking and trade. The interior of the several-storey residence adjoining the tower has retained the raw character of its defensive origins: thick, light-coloured walls and ample as well as simple volumes. Each level provides a different view of the surrounding landscape, whether it be the waters of the River Dordogne, the vine-covered slopes or the villages of stone houses that dot the horizon. The property is surrounded by more than 5 hectares of land, punctuated by hundred-year-old trees.
The patio
To the east, a vast stone patio overlooks the River Dordogne, which flows by more than one hundred metres below. Beyond it, there is a salt-filtered, 12-metre by 5-metre swimming pool with open views of the landscape.
