Location
On Corsica’s eastern plain, the southern part of the Castagniccia region reveals a rolling topography nestled between the sea and mountains, while the property, located on the banks of a lake, is ensconced within a verdant valley and set back from all urban areas.
Four kilometres away is the sea as well as the northeast point of the Corsican Regional Natural Park, whereas the village of Canale-di-Verde, not far from the property, features shops for daily life. As for the archaeological site of Aléria and the Diana coastal lagoon, they are accessible in 20 minutes, while the harbour in Taverna is approximately 15 minutes away. Last, but not least, Bastia’s airport and commercial port, which provide regular connections to national and international destinations, are only one hour away.
Description
A road winds its way through the valley, before following a ridge road to the Peri Reservoir, where the property’s gates open on to an esplanade planted with Mediterranean trees and shrubs.
Built in the 1870s and renovated in 2015, the three-storey dwelling, constructed out of river stones, is topped with a slate tile gable roof, while blue swing shutters, in keeping with the Mediterranean feel, safeguard each of its windows. In addition, a vaulted porch communicates with a patio shaded with a pergola, which is, in turn, extended by a stone staircase that provides access to the garden, whereas a fountain, integrated within a masonry trough, is flanked on either side by a flowerbed and succulents.
Extending over approximately 6,800 m², the property, where the typical Corsican maquis shrubland has given way to denser woodland, is accessible via a gravel drive, planted with yucca and bordered by smooth stones, while larger rocks, meticulously scattered here and there, come together to create a landscaped composition, which echoes the rolling topography around the lake. The Dwelling
The ground floor
A vaulted porch communicates with a foyer, a utility room, of nearly 15 m², as well as a walk-in shower, before providing access to a large bedroom, of approximately 33 m², which includes a wardrobe and a bathroom, while the latter’s whitewashed, plaster-coated vaulted ceiling contrasts with its floor and walls, clad in ochre, green and red mosaic tiles. In addition, the bathroom also features a central oval bathtub and a walk-in shower, separated by a glazed partition, as well as a washbasin and a wooden ladder, which is used as a towel rack, whereas, nearby, a jacuzzi, topped with a glass roof, and an adjacent shower room are located next to an outdoor shower.
The first floor
A hallway provides access to a kitchen and a winter sitting room, featuring visible wooden rafters, from which blown-glass, orb-shaped ceiling lights are suspended, as well as parquet flooring and whitewashed, plaster-coated walls, while glass double doors open on to two patios and a bedroom comes with a shower room as well as a separate lavatory.
The second floor
Three bedrooms and two shower rooms, accessible via a narrow corridor, feature carved wood or vintage shutter bedheads, burnished dressers, bright coloured armchairs, contemporary paintings as well as parquet or terracotta tile floors.
The Pavilion
Built out of stone to match the main dwelling, the outbuilding, of approximately 59 m², includes two bedrooms, a sitting room and a summer kitchen, while a shower room is located next to one of the bedrooms and two glazed wooden doors, surrounded by stone, open on to a grassy courtyard. In addition, a pergola, covered in reeds, provides shade for an outdoor dining area, furnished with a large table, bright coloured chairs, as well as, directly opposite, a solid wood armoire with metal hinges.
The Grounds and Outskirts
Made up of gravel areas around the dwelling, grassy expanses, as well as formations comprised of rocks or smooth stones and plants, the grounds feature a variety of Mediterranean trees and shrubs, such as pines and limes, dense undergrowth, beds and pots planted with either flowers or succulents, as well as other vegetation, which come together to create a stunning terraced and landscaped composition.
Located near the lake, the swimming pool, surrounded by a stone deck, is set back from the dwelling, in the shade of centenary olive trees, while a fountain bordered by hanging plants was created in the recess of a stone wall, near a reading area furnished with wrought-iron chairs.
As for the wood barrel sauna facing the lake and nestled among the pines, it is extended by a wooden patio, which communicates with a pontoon over the water, thereby creating an outdoor living area sheltered from view, whereas the property also boasts an irrigation system that supplies water for the entire grounds.
Our opinion
This dwelling, which reveals its charm via subtle touches here and there, has been renovated in keeping with the edifice’s original spirit, while its river stones and blue shutters still recount, to those who are listening, nearly a century and a half of Corsican history, nestled between water and rolling countryside, sea and mountains. As for the silence of the valley, interrupted now and then only by the sound of water lapping at the lake’s shoreline, it helps slow down the pace of daily life – which here takes on an entirely different rhythm.
Featuring vaulted bedrooms, a jacuzzi, topped with a glass roof, and a sauna facing the water, the property deftly combines architectural authenticity with contemporary comfort, whereas the pontoon over the lake is only missing a small boat in which one would be able to drift and daydream, lulled by the gentle waves.
