Saint-Haon-le-Châtel, LOIRE rhones-alps 42370 FR

Location

The property is tucked away in a charming village officially recognised for its quaint character, nestled in the region around the town of Roanne, at the foot of the Monts de la Madeleine hills, which are one of the northernmost areas of the Massif Central mountain range to exceed 1,000 metres in altitude. Roanne with its train station is close. And the city of Lyon is less than 1 hour and 30 minutes away by car via the A89 motorway.

Description

You reach this Renaissance-style property from a narrow street in a quaint village, nestled in undulating countryside. Rare authenticity characterises this historical property, which stands beside the village’s church. A first house towers in a walled garden that extends across this 680m² plot. This dwelling has a ground floor, a first floor and a second floor in its roof space. A round tower crowned with a dovecote adjoins the building and offers a panoramic view of the beautiful surroundings. At the bottom of the garden, there is a second house. It features an Italian-style covered gallery. A swimming pool that is six metres long and four metres wide lies beside it.

The main dwelling

The main house has a ground floor, a first floor and a second floor in the roof space. It offers a floor area of 200m². It has three elevations of exposed stonework and its south-facing elevation and adjoining tower are smoothly lime-rendered. There are windows on all the floors. The tower has an extra floor at the top: a dovecote, crowned with a cone roof of flat tiles. A sundial above a mullioned window, right of the tower, is listed for its historical interest.

The secondary dwelling

The secondary house lies upon a basement that has been turned into a garage. A flight of stone steps leads up the dwelling and its covered Italian-style gallery. When you enter the house, you step into a large room with a concrete floor and two sets of French windows. On the left, this room connects to an apartment with two bedrooms, a kitchen, a shower room and a lavatory. On the right, it connects to a lounge, a bedroom, a kitchen, a shower room and a lavatory. The whole dwelling needs to be fully renovated. A straight staircase leads down to the basement.

The garage

The garage is the basement of the secondary dwelling. You reach it from a street that lies at a right angle to the property’s other street. This garage offers a large floor area and it has a high ceiling. It also has an earthen floor. A boiler room with a heat pump system completes this level.

The cellar

The cellar serves as a wine cellar.

The swimming pool

A rectangular swimming pool lies at the bottom of the garden. It is six metres long and four metres wide. Its pool liner is currently being changed.

Our opinion

Time stands still in this elegant pair of Renaissance-style edifices, nestled in the heart of a quaint village, which alone forms a chapter spanning ten centuries. The property's elevations, roofs and tower blend together harmoniously. And inside, there are some outstanding historical features, including two listed fireplaces, a spiral staircase with original motifs and an Italian-style gallery. The natural surroundings stand out for their patchwork of lush plains and rolling hills. In this beautiful region renowned for its gastronomy, you can not only enjoy exhilarating cycle rides and country walks, but also savour fine wines. This delightful property would suit a family looking for a main dwelling or a second home, yet it would also be ideal for a business project in tourism.
