A 19th-century manor house with outbuildings
and a 2,000-m² garden, ten minutes from the beach in the Finistère department
Plouescat, FINISTERE brittany 29430 FR

Location

The manor is located in a bucolic coastal town in the Finistère department, ten minutes from the beach and five minutes from local shops. Abutting the peaceful property, far from all disturbances, is an ancient feudal mound, while the surrounding countryside is mostly farmland and Lesneven, the closest town, is 15 kilometres away. In addition, the city of Morlaix with its high-speed rail station, the city of Brest and its airport, as well as Roscoff and its ferry service to Ireland, England and Spain, are all only thirty minutes away.

Description

Between the 15th and 18th centuries, the town included approximately 80 manor houses, including this one, which was identified as one of the so-called “noble” dwellings. Perched on a hill and surrounded by countryside, the property is accessible via a small no-through road that passes several neighbouring houses before arriving at the property with its manor house, which is preceded by a gravel courtyard. Reconfigured in the 19th century using the stones of a former dwelling, the traces of which are still visible, the manor house was meticulously and entirely restored in recent years. Composed of three building structures in the shape of an L, the three-storey house built out of granite rubble stone and topped with a slate gable roof and two large chimneys, is cadenced by windows and doors with granite surrounds. With the living room and bedrooms located in the central building, a right-angle wing includes the laundry room, accessible from the courtyard as well as the manor via an interior staircase. In addition, another small wing, accessible via a door from the courtyard, faces the dwelling and houses the furnace room.
With great swaths of lawn surrounding all the buildings, the property also includes, behind the manor house, an outbuilding made out of rubble stone and topped with a slate roof, which is used for storage, while a former, roofless barn, is located along the edge of the property.

The Manor House

The ground floor
The front door opens from the courtyard onto the living room located in the main building. Opposite, a door provides access to the back garden, while the room’s exposed stone walls are cadenced by a number of windows and the floor is covered in light-colour tiles. With two fireplaces, located on each of the house’s gable ends, the one to the west has been fitted with a pellet stove and topped with a glass ceiling, providing additional light from the upstairs level for this immense room, while the other is used for cooking purposes. Lastly, on the other side of the room, a straight staircase leads to the recently renovated first floor.
The first floor
A small corridor leads, on one side, to a staircase that descends towards the laundry room, which is also accessible from the courtyard, while a hallway provides access to three immaculate bedrooms, all bathed in light thanks to windows facing the courtyard, as well as a bathroom at the end of the hallway and a separate lavatory.
The second floor
Built under the eaves, this floor, which will require a full renovation, is accessible from the hallway where a wooden staircase provides access to a bedroom, illuminated by skylights placed on either side of the house’s gable roof with views of the sea. In addition, a wardrobe and a shower room with lavatory are located next to the stairs.

The Outbuilding

Located in the back and facing the dwelling, this granite rubble stone outbuilding topped with a gable roof is currently used to store the garden equipment.

The Garden

Composed of a gravel courtyard, which precedes the manor house, as well as expansive lawns, the garden also contains a well.

Our opinion

Perched on a hill in a coastal town in the Finistère department, this traditional 19th-century Breton manor house was recently renovated and reconfigured with all modern comforts, while still preserving the premises’ impressive traditional architecture. Built out of granite and slate, the building blends in perfectly with the surrounding bucolic and peaceful countryside, and is located near vast beaches that seem to stretch all the way to the horizon, as well as the cities of Brest and Morlaix, making this property an ideal year-round residence for a large family or a charming holiday destination.
