An undulating landscape of hedge-lined meadows surrounds the property, on the west coast of Normandy’s Cotentin peninsula. The nearest shops are in Bricquebec-en-Cotentin, a town that lies eight kilometres away. The beaches of the local town of Barneville-Carteret are also eight kilometres from the property. The town of Valognes, with its train station, is just 20 kilometres away. From there, you can reach Paris is only three hours by rail. Or you can get to the French capital by car via the A13 motorway. And the city of Cherbourg, with all its major amenities, is a 40-minute drive from the property.

Description

Oaks and horse chestnuts mark the property’s entrance. A gravel court extends in front of the house. The edifice is built in a symmetrical design with a central section flanked with two extensions. Its elevations are made of rubble stone, coated with pale rendering. The stonework of the extensions has been left exposed. A hipped gable roof crowns the main section. Two chimney stacks – one at each end – rise up from the roof. The facade is punctuated with five bays along a ground floor and first floor. The central bay rises up to a triangular pediment with a bull’s-eye window in the middle of it. A cart shelter and a guesthouse adjoin the main section on either side of it. In one corner of the property, there are two small outbuildings with slate roofs. The garden is dotted with shrubs and trees. It extends behind the house and on one side of it. At the bottom of the garden, there is a bakehouse.

The house

The ground floor
In the middle of the facade, a double door marks the house’s entrance. This double door stands beneath a fanlight. It leads into a hallway where a stone staircase takes you upstairs. The gleaming smoothness of the stairs bears witness to their old age. At the back, there is a lavatory and storage spaces. On one side of the hallway, there is a large kitchen. On the other side, there is a lounge. Both are dual-aspect rooms. Wood strip flooring extends across the lounge, the walls of which are adorned with dado panelling. This lounge also features a wooden fireplace, painted in the same tone as the walls and panelling. The hallway floor is tiled with old square paving stones. The ashlar and rubble stone of the hallway walls have been left exposed. Wood strip flooring extends across part of the kitchen, the rest of which has a tiled floor. The exposed beams and joists that run across the kitchen ceiling are painted in the same hue as the walls. The kitchen features an imposing ashlar fireplace, which houses a wood-burning stove. A glazed double door leads from the kitchen out into the garden.

The first floor
The first-floor plan mirrors the ground-floor plan: there is a room on either side. These two bedrooms share a bathroom, which has a lavatory. The staircase leads from the ground floor up to a landing with a floor of old terracotta tiles. Here a door hides a timber staircase that takes you up to the loft. Wood strip flooring extends across the two bedrooms. The ceiling beams have been coffered. A stove has been installed in one of the old fireplaces. The other fireplace, made of stone with mouldings, protrudes from the wall in a warm tone.

The second floor
Up on the second floor, in the roof space, the bull’s-eye window in the facade’s triangular pediment bathes the landing in natural light. Wood strip flooring extends across the rooms. Remarkable timber trusses have been left exposed in all the rooms, beneath a cathedral ceiling. There are two bedrooms filled with natural light from roof windows. And there is a shower room with a lavatory.

The guesthouse
A guesthouse adjoins one side of the main dwelling. You enter the guesthouse from the garden via a glazed door. You step straight into a lounge, where a quarter-turn timber staircase leads upstairs. There is also a kitchen on the ground floor, as well as a shower room with a lavatory. The first floor is taken up by a spacious room with a cathedral ceiling. Roof windows fill this vast room with natural light.

The cart shelter
An old cart shelter adjoins the other side of the main house. Its garden side is closed with a door. It houses a closed garage with a straight staircase that leads up to a loft.

The garden and outbuildings

In the front court, there are two small outbuildings made of rubble stone and crowned with slate roofs. They serve as woodstores. You enter one of them from the court and the other from the garden. At the bottom of the garden, there is a restored bakehouse. It is in working order. The garden is entirely enclosed with hedges. It is dotted with many fruit trees, clusters of shrubs, flowering plants and countless roses – both in bushes and climbers. Neatly trimmed yews separate the garden into two parts. One of these parts includes the fruit trees.

Our opinion

This unique dwelling offers the sublime comfort of a country home and the refined elegance of a classical edifice, just a few minutes from the unspoilt beaches of Normandy’s beautiful coastline. The property is unpretentious and it blends into the surrounding countryside harmoniously. The historical decor is warm and welcoming. It is tastefully understated in style, both inside and outside. The rooms are spacious. Indeed, this haven would be ideal for a family looking for more space. The guesthouse, outbuildings and vast garden covering around 5,000m² are all precious assets on this bucolic property just three hours from Paris.
