Description
The manor house
Built in the 16th century in pure Renaissance style, it comprises a central rectangular main building flanked by a square extension. This houses the spiral staircase with granite steps and a room on each level. The walls are of coursed rubble masonry, the rectangular cross or half-cross stone windows have dressed stone surrounds sometimes topped by a discharging arch. The slate gable roof features three chimney stacks, roof windows and a dormer to the front. The extension has a pavilion roof.
The ground floor
Two doors provide access to the ground floor. One opens into the sitting room and the second into a large entrance hall with the start of the spiral staircase and the lavatory, housed in the square extension. This level is single pile. The rooms follow on from one another; entrance hall, sitting room and dining room/kitchen. The floor is mainly straight strip parquet, only the entrance is tiled. The stone walls are either bare or lime-plastered. The fireplaces in the living room and kitchen are very similar, both of dressed stone and monumental. Ceiling beams and joists are exposed throughout this level.
The first floor
Before reaching a corridor, the staircase serves a bedroom housed in the square extension. It mirrors the rooms on the ground floor. The jambs and corbels of an old fireplace have been preserved as decorative elements and form a recess. In the main building, the corridor leads to a bedroom with en-suite shower room, a separate lavatory and two other bedrooms with their own shower room. Here again, the hardwood flooring is straight strip, the walls are lime-plastered and the ceiling beams and joists are exposed.
The attic
The staircase leads to a fifth bedroom, similar to the others, housed in the square extension. The garrets of the main building are reached by a ladder and could be converted.
The outbuildings
They are situated at right angles to the manor house, in line with one another. Built of coursed rubble masonry with a slate gable roof, the first is of modest size and used as a workshop and storage area. The second is a vast barn, comprising two large rooms in a row, separated by a rubble masonry wall with a segmental arched door. The roof structure and the stone walls are exposed. The flooring is a concrete slab. The openings include rectangular doorways, round-arched windows and an impressive carriage entrance.
Our opinion
A short distance from the sea, a manor house that matches the character of its surrounding pastureland: sober, elegant and timeless. In a perfect state of upkeep and decorated to a high standard, the future inhabitants will be able to move in without any works. The property is an ideal country home, within easy reach of the capital and of all the historical and natural treasures of the Cotentin region.
