Location
The house is situated in a commune in the south-east of the Nord department, in the heart of the Avesnois regional nature park, famous for its meadows, hedged farmland and slightly undulating terrain in the south-east (the beginning of the Ardennes foothills), known as the "Little Switzerland of the North". There is a real village spirit here with shops, schools and a secondary school. There is also a glass workshop and museum, housed in a former glassworks dating back to 1823. There are many signposted foot, bike and horseback trails. The "Château Gaillard quarry" is a former slate quarry that also contains blue stones, which give the water a bluish appearance.
The town is 110 km from Lille, Brussels and Reims, 50 km from Valenciennes and 45 km from Charleroi (Belgium). Fourmies SNCF train station is around 10 minutes' drive away. Belgium is 8 km away and the Aisne department is 10 km away.
Description
With a floor area of some 900 m², the residence has three storeys set over cellars. In pure Art Deco style, it is made up of a reinforced concrete framework covered with brick facing and decorative concrete rendering on the upper sections, and a frieze in relief on its lower edge. Its main facade is deliberately asymmetrical, with a convex projection at one end and an open porch topped by a balcony in the centre. The various-sized windows are straight, mostly tall, with large-panes. The large dormer window with its curved gable pediment, together with dormer windows at the bottom and top of the roof, provides light to the upper floor. Finally, there is a detail that shows the care that went into designing the house: the architect designed all of the ironwork, in particular the outside gate and the staircase banister.
The house
The ground floor
The glass entrance door, decorated with ironwork, leads to a hall with a staircase featuring a wrought-iron Art Deco banister. On the left as you enter, a columned portico leads into a large drawing room surmounted by landings running along three of the four sides of the first floor. The floor is marble with cabochons, and the walls are panelled with an Art Deco frieze decorated with flowers and topped with blue toile de Jouy wallpaper with Hubert Robert-style motifs. These can be found in the bedroom of the "Bungalow", a house built by Danis for himself in Hautmont. At the end of the room, a passageway leads through to a second sitting room, with 18th century-style panelled walls. Illuminated by an oriel window, it features a Victorian-style fireplace in statuary Carrara marble with marbled and coloured inlays on the vases and cup.
Back in the entrance hall, on the right, a passageway leads to a third sitting room, illuminated by an oriel window, which opens onto a dining room. The walls of the living room are adorned with wood panelling and an Art Deco floral frieze, as well as a Louis XV-style marble fireplace topped by an Art Deco stained-glass window. The dining room, with its two white marble Art Deco fireplaces, leads into the kitchen, with its mosaic floor and tiled walls. The old cast-iron wood-burning cooker is still here, and a door leads to part of the cellar, while a corridor leads to a utility room. There are two toilets not far from here.
The first floor
The grand staircase, with its wooden treads and wrought-iron handrail featuring Art Deco scrolls and motifs, leads to the mezzanine landing, bordered by a wrought-iron balustrade overlooking the large living room. The first bedroom is to the left, with its Art Deco fireplace in white marble with floral motifs. It has a bathroom. A second bedroom also has its own bathroom. There is also a third bedroom with an Art Deco white marble fireplace, and a fourth with a Louis XV-style marble fireplace and access to a balcony and private bathroom. Finally, a corridor with fitted wardrobes leads to the fifth bedroom on the floor and a toilet. The floors are covered with thin strip parquet and some of the walls are panelled.
The second floor
Also accessible by the main staircase, it opens onto a landing that leads to two large bedrooms with parquet flooring on the right. To the left there are two further bedrooms with straight parquet flooring. A wooden door leads to an attic which requires restoration.
The third floor
Accessed by a discreet wooden staircase, it comprises three adjoining attic rooms with straight parquet flooring and brick walls. The floor, which is unfinished, is high enough to extend the house's living space quite considerably.
The basement
Accessible from inside the house, the basement is divided into two sections: the first, accessible via a stone staircase in the kitchen, comprises two brick-walled cellars; the second, accessed via a staircase in the hallway, has five vaulted cellars.
The garden
Around 430 m² in front of the west-facing house, it extends like the stern of a ship and comprises a grassy bed planted with cherry laurel and boxwood. It is closed off by wrought-iron gates designed by the architect himself. To the east, a partition could be installed to separate part of it so as to enable vehicles to be parked and to create a second access.
Our opinion
"Bold", "astonishing", "exuberant": there are no shortage of adjectives we could use to describe this curious residence. Seemingly lifted from the famous novel by the American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, it embodies the quintessence of Art Deco style, which is evident in every detail. Unfortunately, the house has suffered from the passage of time and seems to be waiting for an attentive and enthusiastic occupant to restore it to its former glory. Its registry as a historic monument means it can benefit from aid from the government for its restoration as well as tax breaks.
It inspires no shortage of projects. It could be used as a home, offices or a space dedicated to art. A unique testimony to the richness and diversity of our regional heritage, which doesn’t get enough attention, yet deserves our curiosity, consideration and enthusiasm.
