Location
On the Left Bank, along the outskirts of the Faubourg Saint-Germain, a site of historical significance for the former aristocracy, and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a dynamic cultural and artistic hub, the property is located on an elegant and peaceful street, lined since the 17th century with the understated façades of patrician mansions, a constant reminder of the majestic architectural heritage specific to Paris’s Saint Thomas of Aquinas neighbourhood.
A few steps away from these august streets, is the lively Saint-Germain-des-Prés area with the twin terraces of the Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots, which have remained its shining epicentre over the centuries and demonstrate the exceptional appeal of this microcosm, featuring all the resources of the French art of living, such as historical dwellings that attest to an elegant tradition, art galleries where contemporary creation is permanently on display and bookstores where intellectual life is embodied on a daily basis.
Description
As for the carriage entrance, flanked by two pavilions, it provides an overall view of the dwelling’s two-storey main façade, facing south, preceded by a wide patio and featuring a central forepart and six glass double doors on the ground floor, while, to the east, a wing boasts understated ornamentation and is cadenced by tall and wide windows opening directly on to the garden. The latter, landscaped with trees, ornamental shrubs and flowerbeds, not only provides a verdant space, but also a sophisticated exterior backdrop for the dwelling’s main rooms.
Conversely, the second double-door entrance opens on to the dwelling’s entryway, providing access to a guest lavatory, as well as a bedroom with its own shower room, a window looking out on to the garden and a door communicating directly with the covered carriage entranceway, whereas, extending on from this immense entryway, a sitting room-library is followed by an inviting kitchen and a scullery.
Placed at a right angle, a series of rooms and namely, a double living room and a suite, featuring a bedroom, a study, a wardrobe, a shower room and a lavatory, all face the patio, to the south, while, upstairs, a landing provides access to second suite, with a bedroom, wardrobe, bathroom and lavatory, as well as a fourth bedroom with its own shower room. Like the ground floor, this upstairs level, whose seven windows look out over the garden, is bathed in abundant sunlight.
Last, but not least the basement has been converted into a number of more utilitarian spaces – a pantry, wine cellar, utility room – as well as a home theatre, which is located in an immense vaulted room that was elegantly and meticulously renovated. Exuding a sense of precision that is prevalent throughout the dwelling’s interior and exterior renovation, for this property the designing and supervising architect opted for a contemporary aesthetic combining pure lines, fluid volumes and ample sunlight.
Our opinion
With a prime address combining the aristocratic distinction of the Saint Thomas of Aquinas neighbourhood with the dynamic atmosphere of Saint-Germain-des-Prés area, the dwelling, secluded and hidden towards the back of its walled garden, but recently renovated with contemporary elegance, melds provincial discretion with Parisian style.
However, nothing about this property is ostentatious in appearance: with an interior privileging a minimalist aesthetic and high-quality materials, the beauty of its décor never takes precedence over the dwelling’s comfort, whose rooms were furnished and equipped with an exceptional level of care.
From the atmospheric lighting to the humidity level of its wine cellar, careful attention has been paid so that this private mansion and family home, designed for entertaining, can be fully enjoyed by visitors and occupants alike.
