An 87 m² flat, with a cellar, in an 18th century mansion house
in the historic centre of Burgundy’s Beaune
Beaune, COTE-D'OR burgundy 21200 FR

Location

Beaune, the capital of Burgundy wines. The town is enhanced with numerous shops, art galleries, antique shops and wine merchants. Its world renown is also based on the wine auction held by the Hospices every third Sunday in November. This flat, in the historic centre of the medieval town, is 10 minutes from slip roads for the A6 motorway, a crossroads providing links to Paris or Geneva in 2½ hours and Lyon airport in 1½ hours. The train station, just a 10-minute walk, puts Paris less than 2 hours away. Beaune aerodrome, a 15-minute drive away, is open to civil aircraft. Food shops, markets, restaurants and hotels are but a 2-minute walk.

Description

The street facades represent a succession of buildings, the walls of which are interspersed with carriage gates and discreet entrance doors. A large gateway opens into a first, rectangular, paved, main courtyard that leads via a corridor to a second interior courtyard, enhanced with flower-filled parterres and a square bordered with boxwood. The building facade features an arcade of three majestic openings, with charcoal grey-coloured frames, on the garden level and four windows on the only upper floor.

The flat

The entrance door opens, all on a level, into a vast room paved with travertine tiles, separated in the centre by an L-shaped, open, wooden stairway going upstairs. A sober, functional fitted kitchen and a lounge area blend perfectly with the atmosphere of the premises, under the protection of a humble portrait of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul. The glazed openings reveal a view of the interior courtyard garden, with its parterres, planted with boxwood and roses. A small hall area gives access to a toilet and a wash-hand basin.
Upstairs, two spacious bedrooms, with parquet flooring, are but an invitation to relax. Both have their own shower room, with travertine tiles, a vanity unit and a toilet, as well as a view looking down into the interior courtyard.

Our opinion

This 2-storey flat, set at right angles in the interior courtyard, resembles a little, individual house. Light takes pride of place without exposing the rooms to the overly-strong rays of the sun. The impression of omnipresent space is reinforced by its large windows and its high ceilings. The widely open view, taking in the garden, blurs the boundaries between the inside and the outside. There is no doubt that this haven manifests a feeling of timelessness, a deep serenity and the certainty of well-being in the midst of the exuberant town of Beaune. Another way of living the “pro remedio animae” (salvation of souls). Purchasing a property in Beaune is a sound investment and its rental income is guaranteed.
