A luxurious Parisian house that enjoys absolute privacy,
set back beside the city’s famous square Place des Vosges
Paris, PARIS paris 75004 FR

Location

The Parisian cul-de-sac Impasse Guéménée owes its name to the Hôtel de Rohan-Guémené, a princely townhouse built in 1605 on the square Place des Vosges with outbuildings that adjoined this old, calm, secret street. The dwelling stands where the Filles de la Croix convent once did. This convent was founded in 1643. Its Dominican nuns would school girls in the 17th and 18th centuries. The sculpted pediment that crowns the gate bears witness to the building’s original purpose in education: in high relief, the sculpture displays an effigy of a scholar to the left of a globe and an effigy of an antique philosopher to the right of this globe. The property is nestled in the heart of the Marais district of Paris. In the early 17th century, this location placed it in the hub of French aristocratic life. And it is a short stroll from the trendy, vibrant Bastille district.

Description

When you first step through the imposing gate, you are spellbound by the refined ambience of an oasis of calm: a peaceful court dotted with trees and flowering shrubs that edge a paved area. At the end of this court, a few steps take you up to a conservatory that leads into the house. Glazed doors with wooden pane bars lead into a dining room adorned with wooden panelling and a floor of old terracotta tiles. A spacious entrance hall with a floor patterned with terracotta tiles laid in squares framed in strips of old oak connects to the other ground-floor rooms: a large lounge with an old fireplace and a 65m² floor area, bathed in natural light from tall windows; a small lounge with finely carved wooden panelling; and a suite with a wrought-iron balcony that looks out at the court. A pantry, a professional kitchen and a lavatory complete the ground floor. You reach the first floor via a lift or a staircase with a Louis XV style wrought-iron balustrade. Up here, there is a master bedroom, a walk-in wardrobe and a large bathroom adorned with natural-stone facing. On the other side of a broad landing, there is a second suite, which has an elegant fireplace. The three bedrooms on the top floor each have their own en-suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. The first of the home’s two basements has a bedroom with a shower room, a linen room, and an extensive space for relaxation, made up of a fitness room with a sauna, a massage room and a large swimming pool. In the second basement, there is a spacious room with stone walls. An apartment formerly reserved for domestic staff completes the property. You can reach it from the ground floor, yet it also has its own separate entrance on the street.

Our opinion

This luxury dwelling is a rare gem. It is a cosy haven tucked away in the beating heart of Paris. Here, the calm of a country home reigns in the middle of a vibrant city. This splendid property combines modern installations with the historical charm of decor inspired by the 17th century. Yet these contrasts are harmonious. And you can relish the soothing tranquillity of this secret sanctuary, hidden behind its tall wall, as much as the exciting bustle of the nearby Bastille and Faubourg Saint-Antoine districts. In this unique property, you can admire characterful features of the past – wooden panelling, Versailles parquet and fireplaces – while you enjoy contemporary installations – air conditioning, alarms, soundproofing and insulation – that make your life safe, comfortable and pleasant here.
