Our opinion
A mother, a son, a foundation stone. In June 1568, thanks to a bequest from Elisabetta di Cerignano, her son Raffaele – who had joined the Carmelites in Pisa – founded this convent and became its first prior. More than four centuries later, the site still bears the mark of this vocation. The cloister and its stone well, the former cells and the original frescoes still bear witness to a life of seclusion, whilst the pillars of the church serve as a reminder of its six lost altars. The convent subsequently welcomed families and distinguished guests, even serving as the venue for a meeting between the Italian and German presidents, and its rooms boast remarkable natural acoustics. Listed in the Register of Historic Italian Residences, the property covers some 1,578 m², comprising a house and a garage, set amidst approximately 17 hectares of cypress, olive and chestnut trees. Partially restored by the family who have owned it for generations, it awaits someone who will carry on the work, whether as a private residence, a foundation or a retreat, true to the spirit of its founders.
