Our opinion
The origins of Galatina, in the midst of the Salento peninsula, go back several centuries prior to the present day, when the powerful Ancient Greece was busy founding colonies along the Mediterranean shores. Furthermore, Galatina means “beautiful Athens” in Ancient Greek. Now renowned for its medieval heritage and its 17th century Baroque monuments, this little town in the region of Apulia has no reason to envy its famous neighbour Lecce. Standing near to the Basilica of Santa-Maria-d’Alessandria, constructed in the early 14th century, this building is an old 2-storey palace. Inside, the spacious rooms with their high ceilings make it easy for potential buyers to imagine wonderful conversions. Visitors would be able to enjoy the delicious pasticciotto, filled with ricotta cheese, which garnish the shelves of the local bakeries. They could also watch spirited demonstrations of the pizzica and tarantella dances, which according to local folklore help to treat spider bites.
