Our opinion

This property in the Fonte-Santa area stands like a village, in a copse of centuries-old olive and cork oak trees, at the foot of a hill in the Alentejo region. Visitors have to leave the road and go through the perimeter wall to reach this authentic, traditional, Portuguese hamlet. In a state of ruin last century, it was purchased in 2000 and completely renovated, but the original walls and roof tiles were preserved. This hamlet now comprises five separate houses, all with modern-day home comforts: thermal insulation, central heating and running water via a borehole. Dating from the 18th century, the mill was restored in accordance with the traditional construction methods of that time. The inside is welcoming and bright, typical of the south, with exposed beams and terracotta floor tiles. The former milling room measures 120 m² and comprises lounge, kitchen and dining room areas. Through an archway, in what must have been the wheat silo, is an amazing 15 m² library, with a cupola ceiling. The basement houses a cellar and a storeroom. The bedrooms, on the same level, comprise a 30 m² suite, with a bathroom and a dressing room, and a 12 m² bedroom which could become a study. They both look out over a 50 m² covered terrace. The second house, laid out longwise, was restored in keeping with the same traditional methods. Comprising a 40 m² dining room and a 30 m² lounge, it also includes two bedrooms, one of which, spanning 55 m², has a dressing room, whilst the other, spanning 23 m², has an adjoining bathroom. The third house extends over a surface area of approx. 60 m², laid out around a main room which comprises kitchen, lounge and dining room areas. Two bedrooms and a bathroom complete this house. Another two self-contained pavilions have been converted on this estate: one, spanning 40 m², has two bedrooms and a bathroom, the other, a workshop, spans approx. 60 m² and is divided into three rooms. In addition to the outbuildings housing technical machinery, this property includes a 35 m² garage and a little swimming pool above the river, an asset that is much-appreciated during hot weather. On the heights, a panoramic view takes in the Alentejo landscapes and promises a memorable vista at dusk, when the setting sun lights up the hills.
