The mountaintop Monsaraz citadel can be seen standing proudly on the horizon. All around, the vast Alentejo plains reflect their golden-brown scenery, dotted here and there with cork oak and olive trees. An elegant, rural landscape, worthy of one of Van-Gogh’s canvases. In 2009, the current owners built a “monte” on this 28-ha property, creating a luxury hotel, respectful of the environment. Its meticulous architecture is authentic and typical of such large, traditional, Portuguese houses. The brilliant white facades feature shady terraces and a covered passageway on the ground floor is reminiscent of the promenade of a medieval cloister or a North-African style palace. Inside the main house are a lounge, a dining room, a library and three suites, one of which can accommodate disabled persons. The bright, spacious living rooms feature fireplaces as well as underfloor heating to guarantee optimal comfort all year round. This modern house is fully fitted. The other buildings comprise seven suites and a two-bedroom flat, with two bathrooms, the latter also able to accommodate disabled persons. Outside, a swimming pool, heated via a geothermal system, has an ultra-violet filtration system, using a minimum of chlorine, and can be filled via a borehole or running water. With an unobstructed view, this area is renowned for having one of the world’s most beautiful starry skies, the air being so pure and clean. And for those with the most discriminating of palates, Monsaraz was also elected the “European wine capital” in 2015.
