This is one of those places that almost immediately bring to mind the pleasant southern way of living, where the intoxicating scent of the pine grove, warmed by the sun, intertwines with the wonderful fragrance of the sea winds. Serra-da-Arrábida, some 40 kilometres from the historic centre of Lisbon, is one of those settings, classified as one of Portugal’s most beautiful nature parks. This property stands just there, between the sea and the countryside, facing the Sado estuary and the Troia peninsula, with its endless white sandy beaches. This is a “Quinta”, a name which designates the biggest of Portuguese properties, often set in the midst of a vineyard or olive grove. The gates open on to a little lane crossing the estate and leading to the main house on a lower level. The house, reflecting the colours of traditional Portuguese homes, is painted white and blue. Its ground floor comprises a large dining room area, enhanced with a fireplace and a wide picture window, opening on to a terrace and a south-facing garden. A few steps lead to a first half-level, with three suites, two of which have sea views. A second half-level is taken up by another two suites, also looking out over the ocean. A mill, on the heights of the property, has been renovated and is also used for accommodation purposes. It has an unobstructed view over the sea front and Palmela castle, the ramparts of which have dominated the countryside since the Portuguese Reconquista.
