Our opinion
The square itself has not changed. It is the building that has aged, slowly, with that dignity peculiar to buildings that know they will outlive their occupants. Since the 18th century, over 1,000 m² of Menorcan stone have stood their ground opposite Mahón’s historic centre. The inner courtyards have retained their cool shade. The terraces have retained their view over the rooftops. The façade has retained its silence. What time has not taken, no one has touched either. Everything will need to be renovated. The upper floors await, as do the architectural details — intact, almost indecently beautiful for a building that nobody really lives in any more. Down below, shops pay their rent and serve as a reminder that life goes on despite everything. What this building needs is someone worthy of it.
