A small, long-forgotten appellation, Dão has become Portugal’s “new Burgundy” over recent years. These wines are produced on family-owned estates, on the shale plateaux of the Serra-da-Estrella. This large property, on the heights of the village of Pedrógão-Grande, awaits renovation. Constructed in the 1970’s, the elegant house reflects an astonishing combination of traditional and contemporary styles. The inside has promising rooms laid out over two levels, as well as some superb decorative features such as coffered, wooden ceilings and coloured cement floor tiles. This estate also includes a caretaker’s cottage and several farm outbuildings which could be used for reviving the farming operation. Touriga-nacional, Alfrocheiro and Tinta-roriz, the regional vine varieties are now renowned worldwide and give wines character, just like a land proud of its traditions.
