Our opinion
Vicarage Street has run through Painswick since this Cotswolds town exported wool and fabrics to London and Bristol. The restoration of the building has maintained the dialogue between historic materials and contemporary fittings. The south-facing enclosed garden opens onto views embracing the valley below, a landscape composition structured around a generous terrace, manicured lawns and planted borders framed by box hedges. A green refuge protected by stone walls, providing a natural setting for summer lunches and moments of reading. Painswick occupies a strategic position at the top of the five valleys converging on this village, which was enriched by the wool industry before tourism and residential development took over in the 20th century. It is an area where golden limestone still structures villages, low walls and barns, preserving the architectural identity despite growing property pressure on this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
