Our opinion
The dovecotes of Tinos are one of the archipelago’s mysteries. The Venetians built them by the hundreds, using dry stone masonry, with geometric patterns that no one has ever fully explained. They still dot the island’s hillsides like landmarks that time has unintentionally made sacred. On this southwestern-facing slope in central Tinos, the agricultural terraces follow the same pattern of stone laid with patience. A sheepfold, restored in 2009, stands at its heart—self-contained, silent—with its bread oven and cisterns that the elders used to fill in the fall. Some four thousand square meters of vineyards—certified organic for over a decade—complete what human hands have patiently built here. The village of Krokos is 300 meters away. The sea is six kilometers away.
