Our opinion
The Alentejo was contested for centuries between Moorish and Christian kingdoms, and between military orders and the Portuguese nobility. In Sousel, between Portalegre and Estremoz, the stone has preserved the memory of these struggles: a four-story manor house with a tower, built at a time when constructing tall structures was still a way of asserting control over territory. The estate did not stand idle. The vineyards—some 4 hectares in production—continued to thrive. So did the olive grove. The private dam holds back the water as one would keep a secret. A traditional Alentejo house and a warehouse complete what the manor began, on 6.5 hectares that time has shaped at its own leisurely pace. An approved 700 m² project lies dormant in a drawer. It’s just waiting for someone to take it on.
