Our opinion
In 1829, Mahón opened an opera house in a former bastion of its city walls. The Teatre Principal predated Barcelona’s Liceu by eighteen years and Madrid’s Teatro Real by twenty-one years. Spain’s oldest opera house is thus situated on an island in the Mediterranean. A townhouse in Mahón now offers an intimate take on this heritage. Each room has its own character and colour scheme, with patterns and textures playing off one another, whilst furniture from several continents takes centre stage. The fireplaces undulate like frozen waves. By day, the island’s natural light does the rest. In the evening, carefully calibrated lighting transforms the scene.
