Our opinion
On Tinos, the space above doors has never been left empty. Beneath the lintel, the island’s stonemasons would install an openwork transom, carved with birds, cypress trees or ships. It allowed light to pass through and, according to tradition, barred the way to evil spirits. UNESCO inscribed this craft on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015. A village house carries on this attention to doorways. It is not organised around a corridor, but around staircases, landings and small terraces, like a miniature hamlet. The white walls, with their rounded corners, retain the fluidity of Cycladic architecture. On the top floor, the roof becomes a terrace, and the view stretches over the bell tower to the sea.
