Our opinion
Erudite, sumptuous, majestic. Few residences in Granada can boast such a close connection with the Alhambra. In the early 20th century, a Granada-born architect – heir to a line of ornamentalists whose workshop reproduced the decorations of the Nasrid palace – built this magnificent carmen on the slope of the Albaicín opposite the Alhambra, a true declaration of love for the art of the Andalusian masters. Everything here stems from this heritage: the scalloped arches and slender columns of the double-height courtyard, the plasterwork chiselled like lace, the azulejos and marbles, the painted coffered ceilings, the stained-glass windows and the moucharabiehs. The restoration carried out in the 1990s, entrusted to local craftsmen, has restored them to their former splendour. Galleries, state rooms and bedrooms, each unique, are arranged across several levels around this inner courtyard, extending up to the tower that crowns the complex. Below, enclosed gardens, punctuated by fountains, cypress trees and cobbled paths, lead to a secret pool. And when, from the terrace, the eye finally catches sight of the Alhambra, the residence reveals itself for what it is: not a neighbour of the palace, but its heir.
