Our opinion
Some houses hold secrets. This one has kept one for two centuries: in 1813, a young noblewoman known as ‘the Dove’ leapt out of one of these windows at dawn to flee with a British officer. Her family launched an armed pursuit across the whole of Portugal. She never returned. These windows are still there. The Baroque palace, with a rectangular layout, covers some 1,475 m² of built area on 16 hectares of land in the Upper Douro, devoted to vineyards, olive groves and almond trees. Listed as a site of public interest since 1977, the building is in need of a restoration befitting its history.
