Our opinion
In England, there are houses that you simply don’t come across. You either inherit them, or discover them by the happiest of coincidences, at the end of a lane lined with mature trees, with no sign of them from the road. This one was built in the 19th century for a gamekeeper in the Chiltern Hills. The private valley in which the house stands, the ancient woods that frame it and the views over the hills combine to create a landscape that neither renovation nor the passage of time has managed to make ordinary. Some two hectares, a self-contained flat above the garage, and a former stable whose future has yet to be decided. London is fifty kilometres away — close enough that nothing is lacking, yet far enough that everything feels different.
