Our opinion
On January 30, 1823, in the midst of the Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire, a laborer from Tinos struck a piece of wood with his pickaxe while leveling the floor of a ruined church. It was an icon of the Virgin Mary, buried for centuries. The news spread throughout Greece, and the island became—and has remained—a place of pilgrimage for the nascent nation. Below the village of Kardiani, far from this fervor, the slope descends toward Kalivia via dry-stone terraces that generations have built, one by one. A white house stands there, with gray shutters and simple walls, barely taller than the low walls surrounding it. It does not seek to be seen: it gazes out at the sea and lets the wind and light do the rest.
