Our opinion
The roofs extend like wings, the lines recede towards the horizon without ever straightening, and the rounded oriels punctuate the façade with their gentle curves. Co Brandes designed the De Roemer villa between the wars, drawing on Frank Lloyd Wright's art of horizontality and combining it with English curves that soften the geometric rigour. The architect, whose name remains engraved in the landscape of The Hague and Wassenaar, delivers one of his most accomplished works here. The villa does not rise, it stretches. The widely overhanging roofs cast moving shadows on the walls, sculpting the light as the hours pass. The round oriels capture the daylight and make it dance around the rooms. The garden envelops the house in a preserved tranquillity, as if Wassenaar had managed to hold on to the interwar period. An architecture where America and England, modernity and tradition, sweeping gestures and intimate curves meet.
