Its presence could almost go unnoticed amongst the other houses in the heart of the old quarter that bears its name. The same yellow stone decorates the surrounding facades. But some architectural features suggest that here the traces of a very old history remain. The Clos Saint Léonard is revealed on the garden side. Like the castle overlooking the Loir on the other bank, the former priory has been transformed over time without losing the spirit of its convent origins. Even the garden, carpeted with lawns and dotted with pruned boxwood and cypress trees, inspires calm and tranquillity for the soul. The interior renovation gives this venerable house a cheerful and contemporary air, and the house generously bestows its quiet beauty on all around. And the surrounding town is not to be outdone. A very pretty location for anyone wanting to discover the Haut-Anjou region.
Because my paternal family has been here for several generations and it is also my childhood village. I felt that I needed to leave Paris after 25 years there, but I still wanted to be able to go back easily. Durtal fits the bill because it is only two hours by car or an hour and a half by TGV from the capital.
Although its construction must have been a complex process, the Prieuré de Saint Léonard dates back a long time. The oldest elements are concentrated on the southern façade on the street side. A pedestrian gate and a carriage gate with arches of regular keystones, cut from pale limestone, have been preserved, which are consistent with a construction from the second third of the 12th century. A 16th-century pavilion with large, high volumes is supported by a 17th-century extension with a straight staircase with double arches separated by a Tuscan pilaster, each flight of which is covered by a barrel vault.
In 1096, Hubert de Champagne, Lord of Durtal, asked the abbot of Saint-Serge - Angers - for permission to build a shrine in honour of Saint Léonard in front of the bridge of his castle - Durtal castle. After Pope Urban II preached in favour of the crusade on 27 November 1095, a certain Giraud had agreed to give the monks of Saint-Serge the plot of land they wanted to build their priory and the church next to it. The church was sold after the Revolution and destroyed in the early 19th century.

Once you enter the Clos Saint Léonard, you are suddenly transported to another time where modernity, experienced in the comfort of the accommodation, discreetly fades away to make way for resolutely authentic, soothing architecture and a garden with a strong Tuscan accent. Whether you are a family, a couple, friends or a solo traveller, you will appreciate the simplicity of the place, far from the turmoil of the big city.
