Description

The lordly chateau du Mouchet, whose origins in all likelihood date back to the Gallo-Roman era, was built between the 11th and 12th centuries around a fortified complex, some elements of which still remain, attesting to its original location.
As for the edifice, it was significantly reorganised during the Renaissance, and then again in the 17th and 18th centuries, in order to become a residential dwelling, whose décor paid homage to local families and the memory of Diane de Poitiers’ visit. Pillaged in 1792, before being gradually restored, specifically in the early 20th century and in the 1930s, it was listed as a regional Historical Monument on 6 June 2005.
Today, the building consists of a private commonhold property, divided into 26 units for residential purposes and mostly inhabited by their owners, while the grounds extend over more than five hectares, overlooking a preserved setting facing the surrounding countryside. Accessible via a gate safeguarded by an intercom, which is, in turn, supplemented by a similarly controlled front door, guaranteeing the premises’ safety, further ensured by the presence of a live-in caretaker, the property includes four buildings: the chateau and its outbuildings. Lastly, a swimming pool as well as private and visitor parking are also located on the grounds.

The Chateau

Built according to a U-shaped layout around an interior courtyard, which represents the edifice’s true heart and soul, the central section, constructed out of stone, is framed by two towers, one on each end, which provide it with its characteristic allure, while the chateau, cadenced by mullioned and casement windows, is topped with a barrel tile roof, typical of ancient constructions in the region.
As for the main double-door entrance, accessible after ascending a flight of wide front steps, it opens on to the chateau’s common areas, which have preserved their original details, such as a Renaissance-style staircase that provides upstairs access, as well as the courtyard whose medieval charm is still very much present today. In addition, 18th-century restored frescoes add a one-of-a-kind grandeur, whereas the whole has been adapted to modern life with gas heating, a bike storage room and fibre optic internet.

The Flat

With a floor area of 181 m², located on the ground floor, and facing both the courtyard and grounds, it is bathed in abundant natural light thanks to five windows, while a large dining room, with 59 m² and many preserved decorative elements, features a Volvic stone fountain, doors decorated with painted medallions and visible ceiling beams adorned with painted cartouches.
As for the drawing room, of 56 m², it boasts a carved wooden fireplace, topped with a mantel decorated with reeds and flanked by Corinthian-inspired columns, as well as visible painted ceiling beams and original terracotta floor tiles.
Lastly, the bedroom, of 43 m² and once the chateau’s former music room, stands out thanks to its painted vault from the 18th century, decorated with mythological scenes, as well as its original terracotta tile floor, whereas a bathroom, a kitchen and lavatory round out the rooms in this flat.

The Annexes

A private workshop, with approximately 10 m² and electricity, comes with the flat as do two parking places.

The Grounds

Nestled within a verdant setting combining open spaces and wooded areas, traversed by paths, inviting one and all to take a stroll through the surrounding peace and quiet, the grounds are accessible for all of the chateau’s residents, as part of its free and shared usage, making it possible to fully enjoy the estate on a daily basis.
As for the swimming pool, it provides a convivial and recreational space, whereas, nearby, the Mouchet pond, owned by the village, offers an additional natural setting ideal for fishing.

Our opinion

Meeting modern needs in terms of comfort and associated with such accoutrements as a swimming pool and expansive grounds, the chateau’s stunning architecture was recognised with Historical Monument status in 2005, while the flat, with 120 m² of living spaces as well as a bedroom fit for a lord, features the benefits of a chateau without having to bear the burden of its maintenance or expenses.
