Nestled in a peaceful valley, and a village of only five hundred souls, rests one of the Lorraine region’s most important architectural treasures. The chateau, the priory, the blast furnace, the grounds and the Cons-La-Granville river come together to form a first-class historical site. Guests are invited to stay in many different parts of the property, with the exception of the chateau itself as it is inhabited by the owners who are certainly making the most of the attention it attracts – it is open only for visits. The site, which is mostly classified or protected, lends itself with good grace to events and activities of all kinds. Guests will be more than satisfied with the Logis du Prieuré which has been completely restored and refurbished to reflect modern tastes, without sacrificing any of the charms of yesteryear. More adventurous or romantic souls may prefer taking refuge in the bucolic gardener’s house at the edge of the grounds with hundred-year-old trees and birds for neighbours. Wherever they choose to stay, guests will be equally immersed in history.
For nine centuries, the property has been passed from one generation to the next in my family. At the age of twenty-one, I took my turn and certainly had to think on my feet. Fortunately, I enjoyed the challenge. Looking back today, I cannot imagine my life or such a commitment anywhere else – even if it still feels a little overwhelming from time to time.
The property, which is somewhat modest in appearance, is as surprising as it is impressive. A harmonious blend of military, civil and religious architecture is found in one place and ranges from the 11th century to the present day, including the Renaissance and the 18th century.
The priory and the Cons-la-Grandville chateau were both built and founded in the 11th century. They did not, however, experience the same architectural evolution. Having lived separate lives under the Ancien Régime, they were only brought together in the wake of the French revolution to form a single property – Le Clos de Lorraine. Known for their rich history and family continuity, their strengths and vulnerabilities give them a sense of purity and a rare authenticity.
Firstly, a long tradition of hospitality which we undoubtedly owe to the Benedictine influences of the priory. Secondly, the peace and tranquillity of the property as it nestles in the valley, tucked behind a bend in the river. The natural setting creates a unique atmosphere that has been present for many centuries.
The northern stretches of the Meuse river, such as the Belgian Ardennes, offer varied landscapes with rich and little known heritage. The Abbey of Orval, with its famous beer, is amongst the many walks and attractions in the area.
The chateau and the Cons-la-Grandville priory are open for filming. Again, catering and accommodation are available on site or in the surrounding area (hotels, gîtes and guest rooms).
