Long, harmonious and punctuated by large windows, the façade can be seen from the side, behind the entrance porch grille. The courtyard appears in front of it, framed by the outbuildings and with the lake surrounded by trees at its centre. It is majestic without being intimidating. On the contrary, charm and gentleness dominate from the outset. However, the Château de Grisy was not spared by the past: religious wars, the French Revolution and even the Second World War - it has seen it all. Is it this troubled past that makes it so moving? Or that it has been lived in and loved by so many generations? Whatever the answer, its history continues, thanks to a recent, respectful renovation that is now comfortable accommodation. Whether you come with family or friends, all you have to do is allow yourself be welcomed and enjoy a simple, warm château lifestyle.
We were looking for a family home about two hours from Paris. After scouring western France without finding a property that had been left untouched, we fell in love with this one and were particularly charmed by the beauty of its monumental fireplace. Well-preserved, full of charm, accessible and steeped in history, the property was exactly what we were looking for. It has become a place for us to pass on, to our friends and children. It wasn't just a purchase, but a revelation: the place we had been waiting for.
The Château de Grisy is actually a country manor house, with sober yet singular architecture that stands out in the region due to its lack of half-timbering and traditional rendered stonework. Its main facade of ochre stone, some 50 metres long, features huge windows that flood the interior with a maximum of light. Its elegant silhouette is characterised by a large tiled roof on the oldest part and a slate roof on the wing built in 1728. Nestling in a green setting, the estate comprises two walled hectares with several buildings, including a farmhouse converted into a gîte, a small garden, as well as an orchard and a pond that are listed as Historic Monuments. Inside, a staircase with a wrought-iron banister is listed as a Historic Monument.
It was a former pastoral complex, a 16th-century seigniorial farm, enlarged in the 17th and 18th centuries, known as Château de Grisy. It was abandoned after the Second World War, probably because it was considered too large or difficult to heat. After we acquired the property, we began restoring the main house, before renovating the three outbuildings, which will also be used as holiday accommodation. The estate is now a peaceful, unspoilt green setting ready to welcome guests.
A stay here is a taste of château life in a poetic, peaceful and authentic setting. A large swimming pool has been built for the comfort of our guests. The estate is set in rolling countryside, which has been untouched by the modern world. Nearby there are typical markets, flea markets, collegiate churches, walks, the cider route and private châteaux with remarkable gardens. We also open the property to visitors for 40 days a year. An elegant, lively and unpretentious place where you will feel good.
"Le Pavé d'Auge", which has a Michelin star and which is housed in the village's old covered market. The village is listed as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France". In Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives, under the medieval market hall, a large market is held on Mondays, and an antiques fair on the first Sunday of each month. In Livarot, an electronic music festival brings the village to life in August. Nearby, the "Les Arpents du Soleil" vineyard sells organic wines made in Normandy, with a surprising Loire flavour. 30 years ago, a bold gamble led to the rebirth of the vine in Normandy, on a unique ground where clay and limestone blend in perfect balance.
The château, which has 15 rooms on three floors and which is surrounded by six hectares of grounds, can be rented out in its entirety for film and photo shoots. It features a medieval dining room, a period kitchen, outbuildings and a breathtaking view of the parkland, hillside and forest.
