The centuries have passed at Coislin from its foundation in the 13th century to the 19th century, when the present chateau was built. Visitors are transported through the ages in a refined environment where neo-Renaissance architectural features can be found both outside and in the main rooms. The meticulously-maintained grounds are arranged into areas where you can enjoy a stroll, dream under the leafy branches or, for the more sporty, indulge in the pleasures of tennis or swimming. Set in the heart of the countryside, yet less than an hour from the seaside, the estate offers a wide range of activities and entertainment that will appeal to the most discerning guests.
The chateau has been in our family for six generations. I inherited it and I wanted to continue its story. Around ten years ago, after extensive renovation work, we opened the property to the public so that this place, once designed for entertaining, could continue to welcome guests. Today we welcome families and a largely international clientele, who appreciate the authenticity of the place and the spirit of hospitality.
The current chateau was built in 1894 by Jean-Baptiste Le Cour Grandmaison, the son of a shipowner from Nantes, on the foundations of a former 13th-century feudal castle. Of particular note are the shell limestone porch that once marked the entrance to the medieval castel, the former stables and the 17th-century gatehouse. The drawbridge is a reminder of the defensive organisation of the site. Above the main door, a ducal crown engraved in the lintel bears witness to the status the residence once held: that of the seat of the Duchy of Coislin. Inside, wood panelling, parquet floors and family portraits are reminders of the place’s history.
In 1663, the seigneury was made a duchy by Louis XIV. The King granted this title and its privileges to Armand de Cambout, godson of Cardinal de Richelieu, thus consecrating the influence of this great Breton lineage. The family made a name for itself at court and in Paris, where it built the Hôtel de Coislin on Place de la Concorde. Little by little, the Breton estate was abandoned before being taken over and restored by my family in the 19th century, who rebuilt the chateau in the spirit of the follies of the time. In the Second World War, the residence took in refugees from Saint-Nazaire and also housed part of the German army, a unique cohabitation that undoubtedly contributed to its preservation.
The chateau offers a peaceful setting in the heart of a 200-hectare estate, including 50 hectares of forest, providing a haven of peace in the middle of nature. It is distinguished by its discreet nature, offering an atmosphere of exclusivity and authenticity, where silence and tranquillity reign. Guests can enjoy the swimming pool, tennis court and the opportunity to explore the estate's farm. Just 40 minutes from the coast and La Baule, it is a haven of peace and quiet, where you can enjoy the silence and authenticity.
