An Anglo-Norman-style family home in vast groundsat Villiers-Adam, in the Val d'Oise department

Our opinion

Built in the 1930s, the house has retained the unique atmosphere of homes that generations of the same family pass down and improve each generation according to the tastes of the time. Characteristic of the Anglo-Norman style that developed on the Normandy coast from the end of the 19th century, it clearly exudes a certain solemnity, but also the quiet assurance of a charming “old lady” who knows she is still seductive. Everything here has been designed from the outset to make stays comfortable, away from the hassles of everyday life. Today, little or nothing has changed, and at just an hour from the capital, guests will be transported to the heart of nature and perhaps even to another era.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

This place is above all a family affair. Built by our great-grandfather Aristide Quillet in the 1930s, it has been a source of fond childhood memories. We spent all of our holidays on this property, surrounded by the grounds full of ancient trees, in a peaceful, bucolic setting just 30 minutes from the west of Paris. This intimate bond, the rare calm and the natural beauty of the site made it the happy home where we celebrated life.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

Built in 1938, the main house is in the Anglo-Norman style that was in vogue at the time. It is a harmonious blend of stone, exposed half-timbering and pitched roofs. At the back, balconies, bow-windows and terraces extend the living spaces and open out onto the grounds below, where the first part of them is laid out like a traditional garden. The interior spaces are generously sized, and the many windows let plenty of light in.

What is its history ?

Located in the heart of the Chauvry valley and built on the site of a former farmhouse known as "Le Logis", the house was built on a hillside, giving it a commanding view over the garden, grounds and Vexin countryside. Its builder, Aristide Quillet, the former mayor of Villiers-Adam, left a deep imprint on the commune because of his attachment to the village and his lifelong commitment to it.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We offer our guests an authentic 550 m² manor house that has not been altered and which has retained its original decor: herringbone parquet flooring, solid oak doors, a majestic staircase and high ceilings, which all give each room a timeless elegance. Outside, three hectares of gardens with a swimming pool and ten further hectares of grounds provide a peaceful, leafy setting. The vast dining room, which is ideal for festive occasions or gatherings of family and friends, can accommodate around 20 guests.

Places you would personally recommend

The Montmorency state forest is dotted with historic sites, ponds, lookouts and remarkable trees, with the magnificent scenery of the Chauvry valley to the north. For walkers and cyclists, the forest is criss-crossed from north to south by a long-distance footpath (GR1) and the GR de Pays, which runs east-west around the Île-de-France region. In Montmorency, visit the former home of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, now a Maison des Illustres museum. "Le Nymphée" café in the north orangery of the Château d'Auvers-sur-Oise is a charmingly old-fashioned space. When the weather is good, the terrace is the perfect place for a thirst-quenching break, with a breathtaking view over the château's main courtyard.
