An old patrician-style masseria
in Puglia, not far from Massafra

Our opinion

Stood on the heights of a rocky hill, the Casina Trovanza rises as if to take a better look at what lies beyond the crops and olive groves in the distance that lead to the Ionian Sea. Modest in both its proportions and origins, the house seems utterly at one with nature. It does not take long, however, for a multitude of details to reveal a more elaborate side, a sense of patrician pride. Inside, the adjoining rooms create an intimate atmosphere under blond stone vaults, while the terraces enjoy views of the infinite blue of the sky and the landscapes of Puglia outside. In short, this masseria has everything needed for a blur of happy days.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

This house was my family's holiday home and the centre of my carefree life as a child. I began my studies in Bari, then moved to Milan to specialise in economics and environmental management. Nevertheless, I always had a strong desire to come back to Puglia, my region and my roots. I returned to take care of the family farm which has belonged to us since the 70s. And low and behold, Casina Trovanza was born!

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The historic building of the original construction now combines design and art, all the while maintaining the simple atmosphere of country life. The peace of nature reigns over the property. Renovations allowed a reinterpretation of the building's original architecture, yet the link to the region was preserved by using materials and architectural techniques which are typical of this part of Italy. The walls are whitewashed plaster, while tuff or lime vaults separate the interior spaces. By rehabilitating the architectural elements (such as the old interior facade) in tuff, the different phases of construction of this small "masseria" have become more apparent. The main floors and the internal staircase were built with original cement tiles that were salvaged and furnished with contemporary lines. The lower level maintains the simplicity of the pre-existing stable with a monolithic waxed concrete floor. Some traditional pre-existing elements (such as the well and the furnace) were preserved and the dry stone walls and cellars were restored, making it possible for Casina Trovanza to be completely integrated into the environmental balance of the Gravine region.

What is its history ?

Casina Trovanza is a small "masseria", a traditional Puglian farmhouse, built in the early 1900s. My grandfather bought the land and the house in 1969 and it then became a holiday home where I would spend all my summers. The house is located in a rural landscape characterised by geomorphological and environmental aspects typical of the Terra delle Gravine Natural Park, surrounded by olive and citrus trees, Mediterranean scrub and a pine forest. The "cave-house", a "jazzile", the old "pajare" and a small tuff quarry are traces of the peasant world that still stand today. Since 2019, our doors have been open to all those who want to experience country life and a feeling of unlimited space far, but not too far, from the chaos of the city.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

Casina Trovanza is the perfect place to recharge your batteries and relax in the midst of authentic and unspoiled nature - only Puglia can offer such generous lands! The garden is dotted with giant olive trees and Aleppo pines. The terraces of the tufa parapet boast a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and the Gulf of Taranto. The interior decor creates a comfortable and sober atmosphere, combining the old and the new with refined vintage furniture, contemporary design elements and original objects. We organise cooking classes and guests can also reserve lunches and dinners prepared by a home chef. There are cycle paths and walks through the nature trails of Terra delle Gravine on the estate. Wellness treatments, massages and yoga sessions can also be booked.

Places you would personally recommend

We have so many places to share! At the Locanda Zia in Massafra, Rosaria (Rirì to her close friends) prepares food using fresh produce from the market and local products. Bar Laterza is a great spot to discover and savour the original “tornerai”, a traditional ice cream from Massafra! La Birreria is one for beer lovers and the food is a blend of international specialties and traditional Puglian cuisine. La Giordano Pasticerria is a must for the croissants, pastries and, above all, the coffee with almond milk. In Martina Franca, a beautiful baroque town, Gaonas has talented chef Gianfranco in the kitchen who serves cuisine marked by tradition and innovation. Sale e Sarde in Castellanata has a range of seafood specialties. Agostino Bartoli, the chef at the excellent and historic Al Gatto Rosso in Taranto, cooks with passion, technique and tradition. Angelo Sabatelli Ristorante is a Michelin starred restaurant in Putignano and is just perfect! La Pescheria Trattoria del Pescatore, in the Taranto old town, is an informal restaurant with specialties from the Tarentine tradition. It is just a few steps from the seafront promenade, where the fishing boats land. The nearest beaches are twenty minutes away.
