Our opinion

With its elongated shape, numerous arched red brick windows, walled grounds and outbuildings, tall trees and staircase tower that gives it the air of a castle, the Mousseaux manor house has lived through the centuries and undergone a number of renovations to become the charming place to live that it is. Traces of its past, carved in stone or wood, have been blended with contemporary decor, combining the elegance of its architecture with modern comforts. In this land of Raboliot, so well celebrated by Maurice Genevoix in his novel by the same name, the house can accommodate plenty of people. Whether you come with family or friends, you can immerse yourselves in a land of hunting traditions where ponds and vast forests form a unique and endearing natural environment.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

My mother is from Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire and I've been coming to Sologne since I was born. We celebrated my childhood Christmases in the snow and on the frozen ponds, with only the ducks keeping their corner of the pond free of ice. I'm a hunter from a hunting family, and Sologne has been one of the heartlands of French hunting since the time of our knights and kings. It's also a great place for gathering mushrooms from under the autumn leaves.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The distinctive feature of the manor house is that it looks like a small castle, but is actually a big house. It gives you the feeling of staying in a castle, but one with intimate, elegant proportions. The tower leading to the upper floors is harmoniously positioned in the centre of the building. But the charm of the property lies in its location on the banks of the River Sauldre, in the middle of beautifully landscaped grounds. A timeless atmosphere in a harmonious, intimate setting just a few minutes from the city centre.

What is its history ?

The Mousseaux manor house dates back to the early 16th century. It is reputed to be the birthplace of Claude de France and to have been home to François I during his childhood until he was 7. He also entertained Françoise de Foix, Countess of Châteaubriant, one of his favourite people, here. In 1518, Leonardo da Vinci is said to have drawn up plans to transform the manor house. It was subsequently restored in the 18th and 19th centuries, while retaining its original shape. It stands out due to its elegance, its central tower and its harmonious dimensions. It is a historic home adapted to today's requirements. Listed in the French supplementary inventory of historic monuments, it is a fine example of the architecture of its era and a rich royal past.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

It is a place where you will feel good as soon as you walk through the door. Each room has been carefully thought out, combining the elegance of the past with the comforts of today. Here, the calm, the light, the greenery and the birdsong accompany you throughout the day. It is an ideal place to switch off, recharge your batteries and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet, with a view over the River Sauldre. In the winter, you can enjoy the comforting warmth of the fire, while in the summer, the swimming pool invites you to cool off and relax.

Places you would personally recommend

The Michelin-starred restaurants "Assa" in Blois and "Le Favori" in Cheverny will tantalise your taste buds. I've tested it! In Romorantin, there is "Le Bois Blanc", a restaurant awarded two toques by Gault & Millau, or, for a more relaxed option, "Le Cosy". The Amboise market, one of the finest in the region. The Sologne region is the ideal place for walking, cycling or canoeing on the River Cher. Boat trips are available, particularly around Chenonceau or aboard traditional boats on the Loire with sailors. In Salbris, the canoeing and kayaking club has some superb courses. Along the River Cher, there are a number of "guinguettes" and small stopping places where you can enjoy the scenery while visiting medieval towns such as Mennetou-sur-Cher.

The Manoir des Mousseaux is an ideal location for film and photo shoots, thanks to its beautiful architecture, light-filled interiors and unspoilt natural surroundings. Professionals have access to the main manor house, the converted outbuildings and the grounds, which include a landscaped garden, breath-taking views of the River Sauldre and facilities such as a heated swimming pool and gym. Although no accommodation is available on site, accommodation is available nearby to meet the needs of your teams. This unique location lends itself perfectly to the creation of a variety of atmospheres, combining elegance, comfort and historic character.
