Our opinion

With the somewhat unpolished, rough stone and carpentry that still bares the marks of bisaiguës, adzes and crankshafts, La Chapellenie has a rustic edge. It was designed to withstand the frost of Auvergne and the harsh conditions of medieval life. This is without a doubt why it makes one feel utterly protected from the outside world, in a warm retreat with modern comforts. The small walled garden invites you to take a breath of fresh air and walk around the centuries-old alleys which witnessed a time when the architecture, the materials created from the surrounding nature, the local climate and the work of men were intrinsically linked.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

For the strength of its character, its resistant nature and its relative distance that ensures a change of scenery.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

This medieval house, located in the historic centre of Aurillac, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. One leaves the contemporary choices of today and goes back in time. The thick stone walls and the big wooden beams have so much to say! The "cantou", a large Auvergnate fireplace, gives the grand salon a festive touch. This fireplace has the central element of the peasant house and the centre of family life since the middle ages.

What is its history ?

In 1375, the house was given to the abbey of Aurillac - it was a chapellenie, that is to say a gift to the Church in exchange for prayers for the repose of the donor's soul. They hosted pilgrims and sheltered monks, people gathered and rested here. During the Revolution, it became a private house, families lived here, there was a shop and a dryer in the attic. In 2010 it was divided up so that it could be properly reconstructed with respect for its history and a desire to create an aesthetic journey from the Middle Ages to the present day.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We first offer the possibility of doing nothing at all, of letting oneself live, of listening to each other. Books are one of the house's key features, guests can choose their rooms according to their affinities with an author. Convivial moments take place in the reception rooms on the ground floor, they can be warmed by the large fireplace. The walled garden showcases the monastic charm of the place from a well-being standpoint. The high plateaus and volcanic mountains can be explored on hikes. Guests can take trips to a buron, ancestral places that used to make cheese in the pastures, or discover the Romanesque churches, medieval towns built in the ramparts, and the flows and overhangs of basalt.

Places you would personally recommend

The market is a unifying part of Aurillac! Very simple in its structure, it brings together local producers and exceptional products. Mrs. Dupont ensures continuity as a fourth generation of butchers, she selects the Salers beef on the neighbouring farms herself. The Bruel farm has turned traditional pounti into small appetizing bites. Cantal and Salers come straight from the farm, twenty-five kilos at a time. The restaurant "Les Quatre Saisons" has continually provided creativity, high quality and well-presented dishes for many years. "The Mozart" favours traditional cuisine inspired by the Mediterranean. If we stop talking about food - which is difficult in this region - I immediately think of Kate and the Soap Garden, a soap workshop that uses a traditional method of saponification, it welcomes visitors and offers classes.
