An 18th and 19th-century house surrounded by tall trees
northeast of Bellême in the Perche region

Our opinion

You can’t just call a home a family home, the name has to be earned. Some homes carry memories of several generations, others have given way to new arrivals who gradually breathe their own lives into the house. La Grande Corbonnière is one of these. With a great deal of respect, the owners have preserved and enhanced its history, while creating a warm atmosphere where modern comforts blend discreetly with old-world charm. It is about more than just the decor: a thousand details make the house come alive and invite you to live along with it. It has earned the right to be a real family home.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

I discovered le Perche when I was 23. A friend's parents own a lovely 18th-century château in the area, where I have spent many a weekend. 25 years ago, when my husband and I decided to buy a house in the countryside, Le Perche was the obvious choice. We looked for somewhere for five years, because we had very precise criteria. My husband wanted rooms with large windows, high ceilings and there to be water (a pond or a river). I wanted reasonably sized grounds with big trees. The house had to be spacious, but not huge. As soon as we went through the gate, I immediately knew we had found it. We carried out a few renovations, including digging a swimming pool, and the house became our refuge.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The house is perched on a promontory, offering a breathtaking view of the Huisne valley which borders the property. It is surrounded by 2.5 hectares of parkland, planted with majestic trees, some of which are over a hundred years old. The Huisne River, famous for its trout, runs alongside the property for over 500 meters. The building was constructed in the second half of the 18th century, and had a wing added in the 19th century. The floor is made of Perche terracotta and parquet. The windows on the north and south facades are arched, adding an overall charm. There are the remains of a 16th-century château nearby, of which a large tower and a smaller one remain.

What is its history ?

The house was built on a site steeped in history and legend. In the 10th century, Corbon was the capital of the Perche region. Assemblies of the three orders — clergy, nobility and the third estate — were regularly held here. In 989, Hugues Capet granted the Counts of Perche the right to mint coins, a privilege not revoked until 1315 by Louis le Hutin. Several legends were born in Corbon and in the grounds of the estate, one of which tells of two solid gold horses buried there.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

The environment is very calm and poetic and the whole house is bathed in light. It is spacious, yet a manageable size. There is space for everyone to be on their own if they want. The parkland features a tennis court and a large swimming pool (15 x 5 m), which is heated from April to late September. An outbuilding houses a ping-pong table, table football and bicycles for exploring the nearby greenway. It is a family home, which is warm, friendly and, above all, lively. The large, welcoming kitchen features a Lacornue Château 150 stove, which is much appreciated by our guests who love to cook. In the lounge/library, a grand piano and electric drums are available for music fans to play on. On request, we can organize breakfasts, lunches or dinners, whether they be simple or festive. This needs to be agreed on in advance with our guests.
