The new owners of this former wine estate, where cognac was produced, have transformed it into a family home. The houses are surrounded by gardens overflowing with various species of impeccably aligned plants and flowers, creating a truly charming environment. The Gironde estuary is nearby, just a few kilometres away, and there are many masterpieces of Romanesque art to discover in the ancient province of Saintonge. The house is spacious and inviting, and exudes holiday vibes. Each room has been furnished with guests’ comfort in mind.
We wanted a house where we could recharge our batteries and enjoy family get-togethers. We travelled around France for eight years to find this rare gem. We were seduced by the light and sunshine, the sea and the old stones of Romanesque Saintonge. This area is rich with a thousand years of history, and the property is close to the beaches of the Atlantic and the estuary.
The logis de Châteaumerle is a property located in the heart of Romanesque Saintonge on the Atlantic coast, 25 minutes from the beaches. It is situated in a peaceful hamlet surrounded by vineyards, in the middle of a 13-hectare estate comprising meadows and eight hectares of private woodland. It is surrounded by outbuildings and wine storehouses, as well as a large enclosed courtyard garden, a heated, secure and eco-friendly swimming pool and a tennis court. Châteaumerle has been completely renovated using the finest materials and traditional craftsmanship to create a harmonious and pleasant home.
The logis de Châteaumerle is a former cognac house that was still producing cognac around ten years ago. It was rebuilt in the mid-19th century on the foundations of an old château dating back to the 16th century. It was the home of a famous poet from Saintonge, Pierre Ardouin, who wrote about life at Châteaumerle in his poems.
Châteaumerle is an elegant, inspiring, very peaceful place to meet and talk. Ideal for get-togethers with friends, personal development courses, business seminars or remote working, it is also perfectly suited to large families, with its large 45 m2 kitchen-dining room and seven large bedrooms. In summer and winter alike, the grounds and forest are ideal for rest and relaxation. Walks along the wooded paths offer the chance to spot roe deer or admire the many migratory and sedentary bird species. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a wide range of activities: swimming pool, a 100% natural and organic pool, tennis, table tennis and trampoline, table football, boules, balls, badminton nets and rackets, croquet, adult and children's bicycles.
The Saintonge countryside is magnificent, with its castles and Romanesque churches, and the beaches of Royan. Enjoy surfing or going for walks in the estuary or in the Coubre forest. We like to have large, fresh platters of seafood delivered to us from "chez Grolleau", what a delight! We recommend the "Table de Meursac”, just three kilometres away, before an invigorating walk on the beach. We also enjoy strolling along the Pontaillac beach in Royan, followed by ice-cream at "Maison Lopez”, a bit closer to home. For those interested in cognac, the Tercinié family in Chermigniac are gracious hosts. For culture enthusiasts, we recommend the baroque music festival at Abbaye aux Dames or a visit to Sablonceaux Abbey.
The property offers a variety of spaces, both indoors and outdoors, including the outbuildings, some of which have been renovated, while others have been preserved in their original state. There are 13 hectares of woods and fields nearby and even a charming old still to recall the property’s cognac-producing days. There are eight bedrooms on site.
