A former 17th-century farmhouse in the shadow of a chateau,in Saint-Alban-Auriolles in the Ardèche

Our opinion

Situated between the family chateau and the village, the estate’s former farmhouse has undergone a complete renovation that has saved it from oblivion. Restored to the highest standards, it now boasts all the charms of a beautiful home whilst remaining true to its Ardèche origins, as evidenced by its stone facades and roofs topped with canal tiles. The interior design, whilst largely respecting the original layout and favouring fine materials, brings modern comforts to the property with understated elegance and an eye for detail. In the heart of the southern Cévennes, the farmhouse is an ideal base for exploring this sometimes overlooked region, where nature seems to have been jealously preserved, much to the delight of hikers in particular.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

I have lived in the Ardèche for many years and my family has resided here for 300 years. I chose this region as it is my ancestral home. This farmhouse, left to fall into disrepair following the decline of livestock farming, revealed remarkable potential. Its conversion was carried out in keeping with its original spirit, with particular attention paid to authenticity, comfort and the quality of the materials. This commitment fulfils a dual aim: to breathe new life into this place steeped in history and to offer a distinctive retreat for guests seeking an unspoilt setting.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The building has all the characteristics of Ardèche houses, with its dry-stone facades and gabled roof covered in canal tiles. Covering an area of approximately 230 m², it is divided into seven main rooms. Located in the immediate vicinity of a listed building, which I also own, it is subject to the requirements of Bâtiments de France. The refurbishments, both interior and exterior, were carried out in strict compliance with these constraints: existing openings were adjusted, and new openings were carefully controlled. The entire restoration, carried out in collaboration with heritage architects, is in keeping with the original structure.

What is its history ?

Set within a twenty-hectare estate, this 17th-century farmhouse forms part of a heritage complex dominated by the Chateau de Baumefort, situated in the immediate vicinity. Its name, derived from the Provençal word ‘baume’, recalls the fortified cave in the courtyard, once used for defensive and agricultural purposes. The property formed an essential part of the adjoining agricultural estate and played a role in the cultivation of the vineyards and olive groves. It preserves the memory of a rural way of life still vivid in my childhood memories, before its gradual decline. It lay abandoned for a long time, until I undertook its complete restoration.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

A true haven of peace, the property perfectly blends 17th-century authenticity with contemporary comfort. Nestled in the heart of a preserved landscape of vineyards and olive groves, free from any disturbance, it offers a rare setting, imbued with serenity. It features a large heated and secure swimming pool, as well as a pétanque court, inviting guests to enjoy moments of relaxation in complete simplicity. A five-minute walk from the village of Saint-Alban, it offers easy access to local shops and restaurants. From the property, hiking trails wind through the surrounding countryside, whilst the Ardèche Gorges and the river are just a few minutes’ drive away.

Places you would personally recommend

In Les Vans, “L’Olivier de Païolive” offers a refined take on Mediterranean classics, using local and seasonal produce, whilst “La Feuille de Chou” serves up hearty, home-style cooking that changes with the seasons, and the Saturday market brings the town to life with its local producers. In Chandolas, "L’Auberge Les Murets" offers traditional cuisine with local flavours. In Saint-Alban, the Monday market is held in the village square, just a short walk away. Finally, Château de la Selve, a wine estate run using organic and biodynamic farming methods, opens its doors for tastings in the cellar.
