Illuminated by the setting sun, crowned by a medieval fortress and with its stones and Roman tiles, the village gleams like a jewel set on the edge of the plain. Hidden in the heart of the narrow streets that shelter from the heat, the house is only revealed as you enter. Under the stone vaults, the furniture, materials and objects create a gentle cocoon-like you enter before stepping out onto the terrace, which looks out over a landscape of vines, olive trees and garrigue. Full of flavour, just like its fruit namesake, the house is an ideal starting point for discovering the Vaunage valley, a little-known area with a remarkable biodiversity.
We have been based in the region for almost 30 years. Following the sale of our businesses, we decided to develop a business focused on hospitality and holidays. We were looking for an unusual location and the opportunity came up to buy this house in the Vaunage area, between Nîmes and Montpellier. Our choice was guided by the house’s geographical environment. Set back but strategically located, it is 15 minutes from Nîmes and Sommières, and around 35 minutes from Montpellier and the beaches. The area also has many cultural and historical sites.
The date inscribed on the house facade is 1804, although it appears to date back further. It is said to have been built around a 350-year-old vaulted cellar, once part of the nearby Château de Boissières. This history is reflected in the building's architecture: stone walls, vaulted lounges and bedrooms, sometimes with exposed stone, sometimes whitewashed, old beams and generous volumes. The facade also features two sculpted spirals, traditional protective symbols that were once set on the thresholds of houses. As soon as you enter, the living room opens onto a large patio door with a view over the Vaunage valley, with its vineyards and garrigue. Below, the swimming pool enjoys a privileged view of the Château de Boissières. .
We don’t know very much about the house’s history. We know that it belonged to the current mayor of the village for many years, who undertook major renovation work. The building’s evolution is still visible today: the current living room was once a shed, and a small window between the master bedroom and the mezzanine corresponds to the original opening in the main building. Its old shutter, a remnant of the past, is still preserved inside. We acquired it in 2025.
La Papaye is nestled in the heart of the Vaunage, between Nîmes and Montpellier, the ideal base for exploring the natural and cultural treasures of the Gard department and the Occitanie region. The house is an invitation to slow down, share and savour the present moment. It is a gentle interlude in the heart of the Gard and an ideal haven for epicureans. The carefully designed areas are ideal for relaxing and getting together with family and friends, or for a romantic getaway. The house has a sunny terrace, a landscaped garden and a private swimming pool which is open from April to October. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the proximity of iconic natural sites such as the Pic Saint-Loup, the Pont du Gard and the Gorges de l'Hérault - perfect for swimming, hiking or canoeing. Just a stone's throw from the house, numerous hiking and cycling trails wind through the Gard countryside between vineyards and olive groves.
"Chez Unikie”, our neighbour's shop, sells homemade cookies. In the heart of the village of Saint-Côme-et-Maruéjols, the "L'Olea" restaurant serves seasonal bistronomic cuisine prepared with fresh, local produce from an olive farm. In Calvisson, "Monique", a Michelin-starred restaurant run by chef Julien Caligo, offers modern gourmet cuisine in a converted barn. The "Le Mas du Trident" cheese dairy in Saint-Dionisy is famous for its farmhouse cheeses made from raw ewe's milk. The Junas Jazz Festival, held every summer since 1993, brings the village to life to the rhythm of eclectic jazz in the quarries and squares of the village.
