The manor, the farmhouse and the stables stand facing the Gulf of Morbihan in a U-shape, as though jealously guarding the spectacular view of the water, the Île aux Moines and the Île d'Arz which all three of the buildings protect from prying eyes. With centuries-old architecture which has recently been reinterpreted, enlarged and furnished with modern comforts, Kerat offers all kinds of stays. It caters to those who wish to gather in privacy as well as to those seeking to organise large reunions. Lulled by the lapping of the waves and the chiming of halyards against masts, guests will be able to relax with infinite pleasure here after outings at sea, hikes or cultural visits.
We bought the Manoir de Kerat, our second home at the time, after falling head over heals for it in 2004. We were enchanted by the location of the property just a one minute walk from the sea, a ten minute walk from the village and the port of Arradon, and only a fifteen minute drive from Vannes. Since buying it, we have carried out numerous works including the renovation of existing buildings and the creation of two new houses. In 2020, we decided to open Kerat to holidaymakers, business seminars, personal development courses and cultural activities in order to share this magical place with our guests. We want it to be a place with a focus on beauty that opens up the conscience.
Our estate consists of four buildings overlooking the Gulf of Morbihan. It includes a 14th century manor house, a 19th century farmhouse and two new buildings that were built ten years ago. The Manoir de Kerat is a noble residence whose ground floor probably dates back to the 10th century and whose additional floors (added by Lord Redoret) date from the 1390s. The Manoir de Kerat's most interesting architectural feature lies in the contrast between the very traditional housing structure (with a 28-metre-long facade and round chimney stacks) and the great sense of modernity brought by the two perfectly symmetrical spiral staircases and the internal chimneys which are completely incorporated into the walls and latrines upstairs. The property has one hundred putlog holes arranged in two or three rows under the roof which serve as a dovecote. Their presence also indicates that it was a seigniory whose area of ??cultivable land was around one hundred hectares - this is according to the rules established between lords in the past which dictated two putlog holes for every hectare. It was one of the largest seigniories in Vannetais.
A first building was built on this site in the 10th century. Until the Renaissance, it lived through many trying times such as the Black Death, the succession crisis for the French crown coveted by the Capetians and the Plantagenets which led to the Hundred Years War in 1340, and the crisis between France and England which led to Brittany being separated from France at the end of the 15th century during the marriage of Anne of Brittany and Charles VIII. Throughout this period, the manor played a defensive role and was intended to protect peasants and cattle during raids by English and French armies. The rooms on the first floor were equipped with interior arrow-slits so that assailants who had succeeded in penetrating the ground floor in the great hall would remain under the fire of arrows shot by inhabitants who had taken refuge upstairs. The manor passed to the Arradon family in 1480 following the marriage of Perrine Redoret, Lady of Kergat, with Jean d'Arradon, Lord of Kerran. The two seigniories were then united in Kerran. During the Renaissance in the 16th century, the manor lost its defensive function and was opened to visitors. It later became a farm building and remained a farm until 1975 when the first restoration works began.
An elegant simplicity and authenticity in a site full of beauty. A place where everyone can recharge their batteries and open themselves up to other dimensions thanks to how attentive we are able to be. A haven of peace with a view of the Ile aux Moines and the Logoden Islands which allows you to watch the sunrise over the gulf as well as the passing boats that dance across it. A magical site at the water's edge which allows guests to enjoy various water activities from the house including swimming, paddle boarding, sailing, and kayaking. Many coastal paths are also accessible from the property. There is a tennis court five minutes away and a golf course just a short drive away in Baden. We put great emphasis on welcoming guests as though they were at home and provide quality services that combine comfort and simplicity whilst also making visitors feel pampered. This allows everyone to relax and find new energy.
The colourful Vannes market has many organic producers and breeders and the fish market brings together local fishermen and oyster farmers. In Arradon, the artisanal area of ??Botquelen and the market on Tuesday and Friday mornings bring together the best food artisans. They include Lionel Dourot, an artisan salmon smoker, and the Kerouzine cheesemonger which has one hundred and fifty different products. The owner of the Gourmandises Bretonnes pastry shop earned his stripes at Pierre Hermé. There are also many good restaurants. Of note in Vannes are Le Roiscanvec, La Gourmandière and Tête en l'Air. For simpler spots that still use products from the market, try L'empreinte and L'Iodé. In Arradon, La Timonerie, La Charrue, and La Crêperie de Pomper are worth a visit. Enjoy an oyster tasting with Yvonnick Jegat, a traditional oyster farmer who raises his oysters the old-fashioned way. He has a terrace which is bathed in light as the sun sets. In summer, guests can also explore the jazz festival in Vannes, the interceltic festival in Lorient, and the Semaines Musicales du Golfe which organises concerts in remarkable religious buildings.
