Overlooking the village and the meeting point of the Loire and Vienne rivers below, the Château de Candes took up its watchtower position on older foundations in the 19th century. The tufa stone it is shaped out of is unique in that it "carries" the light of the Loire region, which changes with the seasons and the time of the day. The recent renovation of the premises made the bold choice of associating the ancient world of patrician residences with the contemporary world illustrated by a colourful, lively and energetic decoration that shakes up habits and surprises the eye. With the multitude of accommodation it offers, from single rooms to independent suites, the estate will delight modern art lovers and everyone else for a weekend or longer.
At the end of the year 2000, while on a trip to Touraine and at a time we were searching for an exceptional property, we fell under the spell of this residence with its paladin villa appearance and exceptional view of the confluence of the Loire and the Vienne. And since then a new life began for us! After acquiring the château, we undertook the complete renovation of the estate and enriched it with our taste for contemporary art. In 2019, we inaugurated the Street Art Parc, demonstrating our commitment and passion for contemporary art. Since 2022, our son and his wife have taken over and bring their vitality and passion for the performing arts to the property.
The 19th century castle is neo-classical in style and stands alongside a tower, stables and a large wine press dating back to the 15th and 17th centuries respectively. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1977, the castle is built out of tufa stone and covered with a slate roof. The buildings are arranged in a U-shape, opening out to the south. The main building has one floor and garret rooms under the eaves. The main facade, to the north, is preceded by a circular arched forecourt in its centre, surmounted at the attic level by a pediment pierced by a window. On the first floor, the balcony which a French window opens onto is supported by two columns on either side of the entrance. The park is a testimony to the history of Candes-Saint-Martin. It is bordered by the medieval ramparts of the village. There are traces of a Gallo-Roman city, but also a mysterious arena, unique to Touraine, whose origins are still unknown.
The Château Vieux de Candes, which had served as the summer residence of the archbishops of Tours, was abandoned in 1682. It was at this time that Bishop Michel Amelot de Gournay began constructing a new castle. It was sold in 1781 by the Archbishop of Tours, Archbishop de Conzié, with the king’s agreement, to finance other real estate projects, in particular the redevelopment of the Grandmont-lès-Tours of and its park, which had just been joined to the archbishop's properties. Acquired at auction by Alexandre-Jean-Baptiste Cailleau, architect and mayor of Saumur, it was destroyed in 1820, with the exception of the outbuildings, and the contemporary château was then built. We acquired it in 2009 and after three years of work, we opened it to holidaymakers with 29 rooms offered in the form of gîtes or rooms in the château.
Perched on the highest point of the village of Candes-Saint-Martin, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, our intimate, unusual residence welcomes travellers in search of tranquillity, culture and well-being. From the terrace, the castle offers a unique view of the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers. Its park and its hundred-year-old trees, its French gardens, its "Zen garden" with its sauna, heated swimming pools and troglodyte massage room offer a space to unwind. With a passion for contemporary and performing arts, we have transformed the five-hectare park into an urban art museum. Our guests can enjoy the street art trail as well as yoga classes on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Candes-Saint-Martin is located in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park. Here the river Vienne joins the Loire, making the village an ideal place for swimming and boating. "Toues", traditional flat-bottomed boats, offer private cruises on the Loire and the Vienne to enjoy the natural beauty of these wild rivers. Candes-St-Martin in Saumur, a stop on the "La Loire à Vélo" itinerary, offers riches to discover alternating between prolific vineyards and troglodyte sites. The Collegiate Church of Saint-Martin de Candes dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries and is a listed historic monument. At the foot of the collegiate church, "L'auberge de la route d'or" offers "fresh market cuisine" with a clear trend towards organic food. The village of Montsoreau, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, is within walking distance and hosts a music festival every summer - "Les Musicales de Montsoreau".

The Street Art Parc's evening events take place every Tuesday from 6pm from 25 July to 15 August. These consist of musical entertainment, shows, workshops, games, street art, and refreshments. For the catering, the Street Art Camp has modified caravans and trucks. Sometimes a bar truck, sometimes a wood oven trailer or even a stage trailer!
The Street Art Parc is a museum accessible to guests throughout the season. Works that are usually found in urban areas are shown in the listed park of a château in the Loire Valley. This corresponds to the offbeat spirit that the owners resolutely wish to adopt.
The Street Art Parc offers residencies for street artists to express themselves away from their urban environments. Every summer, visitors are invited to explore the five hectares of parkland to discover the works created by our artists. Artists' residencies are offered at the initiative of the château and can also be organised on request.
Visit of the Street Art Parc and the castle grounds via a five-hectare circuit. A map is given to visitors to help them locate the works. Evening shows on some Saturdays in June and every Saturday in July and August.
