Our opinion

The Loire served as a commercial passage for many years, but was also a border that required defending at times. This is how many villages came to be established along its banks, often dominated by imposing fortresses that were later transformed into pleasure homes. Montsoreau was no exception. Le Clos de Tremières is a simple bargemen's house in the shadow of the chateau. Nestled in the heart of a village carved into the tuffeau stone, it perfectly illustrates the laborious past of the Loire men. Retaining this original modesty, the owners have managed to create a gentle and intimate place protected by a small flowery courtyard. The warm decor and the zenithal light breath life into endless nooks that will tempt guests into resting, that is unless they are admiring the Loire from the terrace and allowing themselves to be lulled by the sweetness of Angevin.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

After a life spent between Tours and Nantes, we decided to move closer to the family vineyard in the Loire, a place that has always been dear to our hearts. We were enchanted by this village which is listed among the most beautiful in France. It faces the Loire and the traditional inland waterways. We immediately appreciated the closeness with nature, being in the heart of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine regional natural park, and the sweetness of life in the Loire Valley. We love our serene life in the countryside that is also close to the dynamic centres of Saumur, Chinon and Tours, and their many cultural attractions.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The house's most important feature is the north facade which is typical of the houses along the banks of the Loire. It is full of charm and elegance thanks to the whiteness of the tuffeau stone sourced from quarries in the region. The property is surmounted by a stone terrace, the highest point of the building with only the Loire on the horizon.

What is its history ?

When we bought the property, this 15th century bargeman's house was in its original condition. Vestiges of its life and character still remained. From the location alone, just a few metres from the banks of the Loire and the port of Montsoreau, we immediately saw the house's potential. We therefore carried out a whole year of works to remodel and redecorate the place, and to bring our imagined home to life. We have taken great pleasure in investing ourselves in this place in order to give it a soul and to anchor it in local life through objects found in nearby flea markets and materials from the region. This abode is more than just a pleasant house. It is also a place of commerce with a beautiful antique shop on the ground floor. For fifteen years we have been welcoming family, friends and travellers who are curious to explore the beauties of Touraine and Anjou.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We offer a taste of the Loire to our dear visitors. A pied-à-terre just a stone's throw from traditional villages and lively markets, a romantic and cultural getaway in this wine-growing region where it is a joy to simply stroll and discover local products. We welcome our guests in a completely independent gîte/apartment with a terrace, a parking space, and accommodation for three guests.

Places you would personally recommend

In addition to the well-known chateaus of Saumur, Chinon, Villandry and Rigny-Ussé, and the royal abbey of Fontevraud featuring a museum and temporary exhibitions, the region is full of treasures waiting to be explored! For sports enthusiasts, the Loire à Vélo cycling route is 900km long and a real treat. Discover the Loire with Denis Retiveau, winemaker and owner of the Domaine Viticole des Champs Fleuris, aboard his "toue cabanée" - a traditional boat formerly used by salmon fisherman. The tour is accompanied by a tasting of his wines with a charcuterie platter or a gourmet menu. Enjoy a wine tasting at the Domaine de la Paleine, which is resolutely committed to organic farming and has been awarded a biodynamic certification. In the heart of Montsoreau, a charming village on the banks of the Loire, the Ververt restaurant serves creative, fresh and local cuisine.
